Second place when to John Hjelm, who had traveled from Colorado to make the race. "' had a really great time at Grattan," said the Erico Motorsports/Vanson Leathers/Motorex Oil/Galfer Brakes/Professional Brokerage Services-sponsored Hjelm. "The timed qualifying was one of the reasons we decided to go. I got to race with Jim Struke and Jeff Chen a few laps before Jeff started pulling a little distance on traffic. I tend to wait for a sure, easy pass, and I think that hurt me a little. Organization of the event was good. I enjoyed meeting so many 125cc riders in one place. The only other place I have seen around 30 bikes at one race was in California." On the final spot on the box was the top Canadian finisher, Struke. "Unfortunately, although I had a decent result in the race, it was relatively uneventful," said Struke. "Being a polite Canuck, I wasn't nearly as aggressive in traffic as I really needed to be." Can-Am 125cc Grand Prix Challenge Round Z: Grattan Raceway Chen Takes the Challenge grab the brake to not jump the start," said Chen after the race. "Of course, this was precisely the moment the flag was flown, so I got a horrible start. Unfortunately, Mark had left early, and I looked over at the official, hoping he would not be penalized. My start had left me somewhere like sixth going into turn one." Larkby's race didn't last too long. He was taken out by a backmarker early in the race. "Apparently, two or three of the leaders went inside," Larkby recounted. "There was a bike or two immediately to my right, leaving no room to pass safely that way, and [a backmarker] directly in front of me. I went to the left, as there was still plenty of room and he was braking very slowly. When the guys went inside, he got a bit spooked and twisted the throttle, which pretty quickly matched my speed as I was going around on the left, and all of a sudden we were right next to each other. I stood up and hammered the brakes, hoping he would just continue past me. He grabbed his front brake and crashed hard. I, not being one to let the leaders get away, was still going to keep going, so I tumed and accelerated for all I could get out of the bike. Milliseconds later, the 'Priller' was Hondakebob. It spun the bike and me completely around and broke stuff." While the two riders were out of the impact zone, the rider who had taken Larkby out got up and was walking around when he just collapsed. The corner workers immediately called for an ambulance and the red flags came out. ,By this time, the leaders were on lap eight. Being past half-distance, the race was called final. By THE DUKE GRAlTAN, MI, JULY 8 he second round of the SilkoleneStore.com Can-Am 125cc GP Challenge, presented by Moto liberty, was held under hot and humid conditions at Grattan Raceway. Twenty-eight riders qualified for round two - seven Canadians and 21 Americans. The pole time, setting a new track record for the 125cc class, was 1:23.676, set by American Jeff Chen from the Dark Horse racing team, just edging out Mark Gonyou. "Before the session started, Mark Gonyou and I agreed to cooperate to try to set fast times," commented the Ace Powersports/Anobi Technologies/ Charles Bedrosian/Fluid Suspension/ GP City-backed Chen. "When the final times were announced, I was pretty surprised to find that I was the polesitter. " "He snookered me!" said Gonyou with a smile. Jim Struke was the top Canadian qualifier, qualifying third with a 1:25.935. Also on the front row for this weekend's event were Gonyou, who just missed out on pole, turning in a 1:23.872, and Chip Larkby, who qualified fourth with a 1:26.340 on his Aprilia RSR 125. For Gonyou, the race was over as soon as it started. The starter held the 30-second board for a long time much longer than is typical - before he threw the green flag. Gonyou, anticipating the green, rolled forward too much and was judged to have jumped the start. Due to GLRRA rules, the hosting organization, Gonyou was docked a lap rather than forced to come in for a stop-and-go. AMI National Hot Shoe Series Frederick Half Mile Roeder, Murphree Share Wins By LEN BREECH FREDERICK, MD, JULY 4 eorge Roeder II and Johnny Murphree took Expert-class wins in opposite fashion at the Frederick Lions Club's 79th annual Barbara Fritchie Classic at the fairgrounds' paper-clip-shaped oval. Murphree capitalized on a slight late-race bobbie by leader Dominic Beaulac to take the 600cc Expert lead, while Roeder was starting to pull away from Steve Beattie and the rest of the 750cc Experts when the rains started to come down. As the riders were G pulling off, it went from big drops to sheets of rajn, forcing officials to call the rest of the races. Pro Sport riders were paid by the lineup for the final. Chris Klinefelter was pressured by Cory Hormes and Brett Pankey into the faster of the two 505cc heats, while Frederick's Joey Tyeryar was awarded second money after his easy win. The 600cc Pro Sport contest featured an interesting dilemma: Both races were stopped for non-injury low-sides, and it was argued that since one had happened on the seventh lap, causing that race to be declared official, the other was'
