With three of the four riders ,,-;Cl~~ in this class being Division One Speedway riders, past and present, this was a good race. Farrell challenged early in the final but fell back to fourth after overcooking it in turn three, and he had to gather it all back up to catch the pack. Leivan stayed close for the next few miles and, when the time was right, he made his move. "I saw that we were catching Chad and thought if I could get by Ryan and Chad quickly, they might fight amongst themselves and I could get away," Leivan said. "I passed both of them within a half-mile or so, and then I put the hammer down." The fourth lap by Leivan turned out to be the fastest of the day, a 27:21, and by the time he hit the scoring check, he had built a 35-second cushion on Busenbark - who, as it turned out, had become the victim of a pair of flat tires and had pulled out of the race. With no pressure from behind, Leivan continued at his blistering pace and headed toward the finish. After a last lap at a nearly identical time to his previous lap, Leivan had stretched his lead to just over two minutes, and, in doing so, the Answer/Dunlop/Scott/ProClean/Silko lene-backed rider claimed his fourth career Flat River Grand Prix Governors Cup win. "I came into this race totally prepared and really motivated to do well," Leivan said. "I knew I could push hard all day, so I wasn't real concerned about the pace being so fast at the start. When I got in front, I stepped it up and was able to pull away. A big thanks to my mom for taking care of the pit board today and keeping me fired up." Runner-up honors went to Wuebbeling, who put in a solid ride to back up his victory at the previous round. The final podium position went to Yount, who was in the thick of things all day and put together an impressive performance. Brock Busenbark and Matieson took their rounded the pit area. The fastest riders negotiated the trail five times, with laps taking around 28 minutes. Sixteen AA riders made the short jaunt to turn one, with Chris Nesbitt and Aaron Shaw taking their customary positions at the front of the pack_ Local boys Ken Yount and Bobby Duncan were next, followed by Ryan Wuebbeling. A determined Leivan entered the woods in sixth. Nesbitt set a fast pace from the start, and most of the class latched on. Nesbitt completed lap one leading a pack of 13 riders who were separated by less than a minute. While this seemed impressive, what most observers didn't realize was that Brock Busenbark and Rick Matieson, who were running one-two in the A class, had caught up to the AA boys and were actually leading the event on adjusted time. Busenbark was the 11th bike through the checkpoint, but he was leading the overall by 20 seconds. The pace up front continued to be quick, and this forced half of the lead pack to drop back on lap two. Chad Busenbark was the rider on the move, showing his familiarity with the racetrack by using lines that the rest of the pack never saw and moving from eighth after the first lap all the way to second. After 50 minutes, Nesbitt still led the way over Busenbark. Wuebbeling was third, ahead of a seemingly patient Leivan, while Shaw was in fifth. During the third circuit, Busenbark took over the lead, albeit with a little accidental contact between himself and Nesbitt, who was able to get up and hold on to second_ Leivan had moved around Wuebbeling and into third, but he had lost about 30 seconds to the fleeing Busenbark. Going into lap four, Nesbitt pulled in for a splash of gas and was overtaken by both Leivan and Wuebbeling. After suffering his first defeat of the 2001 campaign at the previous event, Leivan showed up with his race face on and corrected the m ista kes he made a week earlier to claim his sixth victory of the season. S The Flat River Grand Prix was a two-day event. Between the A TV race on Saturday, a pair of Pee Wee races, a Poker Run, and Sundays' main event, more than 450 riders participated and helped raise in excess of $30,000 for the March of Dimes. Sundays' racecourse was 11 miles long and in nearly perfect condition.
