(Left) Tiger Lacey took top honors In the 125cc A class. (Right) Darryl Zumpsteln had fun in the mud, finishing second to Cantaloupe in the 40+ class. snared a win in the adjoined (7-8) class to finish ahead of heavily favored Northwest riders Jared Wood and Cameron Russell. Oregon's Tiger Lacey and Californian Daniel Blair went head-tohead in Friday's 125cc A class, but it was the up-and-coming teenager Lacey who scored the overall win. Blair fended off all of Lacey's challenges to card an impressive firstmoto victory, followed by Lacey and KTM-mounted Californian Mark Tilley. Lacey nabbed the lead out of the chute in moto two and would remain there to earn the rider from Wolf Creek, Oregon, an overall win despite Blair's looming advances. Blair (1-2) netted second overall ahead of the consistent Tilley (3-3). Idaho's Leighton Lillie (4-4), Schoen (6-5) and Alaska's Jerry Lymburner (8-5) rounded out the top six overall. Cantaloupi, who made the trek from Stockton, California, didn't have many challenges in his 40+ A class win on Saturday, by far the muddiest of the four days of racing, which included Sunday's AMA Chevy Trucks 125/250cc National. Cantaloupi bolted out front at the unleashing and rode a solid performance in the tire-plugging mud to score a win in the single-moto formatted program. The only class to run two motos on the day was the Women's Motocross League National class, won by Tania Satchwell. Trailing the former factory Yamaha rider at the finish was a pair of impressive riders, Washingtonians Greg Nelson and Darryl Zumpstein. Nelson held second to Cantaloupi for most of the moto until Zumpstein charged through traffic after a poor start to take the lead from him with a lap remaining. There were many starters in the field of riders, but few finishers. Matt Coleman, Jim Diyorio and Mark Olberding completed the top six finishers. Perhaps the riders with the toughest challenges were the 50cc contestants on Saturday. In the 50cc (4-8) oil-injection class, only one rider finished. Yamaha-mounted Justin Riley carded a winning performance t6 nab the top brass. The 50cc (7-8) Stock contestants fared much better, although the conditions were much the same. Oregon's Mitchell Newton scored a win in the field of 34 riders on his KTM. Only 13 riders finished, however, with Mitchell holding the point position for much of the race. Second place went to Washington's Trent Jones, who rode a Cobra, followed by Montana's J.D Undem aboard a Cobra. There were three divisions of highly competitive Before the Hill-class riders that was open to all rider classifica· tions, from D to B. Califomian Justin Sanders scored a convincing overall win in the first division with a 1-1 sweep. Washington's Royce DeVol netted second overall via 5-2 placings, while Ronnie Peterson finished third (3-4). Texan Eric Hydepohl, who made the trek West from San Antonio, nabbed the overall win in division two, also with a double-moto decimation. Montana's Adam Denher went 3-2 to collect second overall ahead of Oregon's Brody baxter (4-3). Oregon's Tyler Fick topped division three with a 1- 1 sweep to lead Sacramento's A.J Perez (3-2) and Washington's Sean Stewart (2-4) overall. eN Washougal Mataerou Par1l Washougal, Washington Ilesulls: July 21-28, 2001 30.
