AMA Washougal Amateur Days Washougal Motocross Park Emig won both the moto and the overall. Kelvin Schoen finished third, followed by Sawyer and Californian Vincent Blair. Sawyer (2-4) netted runner-up laurels to Emig, but ahead of Suitter's 3-6 performances. Dave Coupe was Emig's main competition in the 25+ and 30+ A classes. In the 30+ class, Coupe kept Emig honest for the entire first moto to finish second, followed by Rick Hansen and Californians Monty Ware, Michael Johnson and Marty Klossner. Emig and the Yamaha Yl426Fmounted Ware filled the first and second positions on the opening lap of moto two, but Coupe worked up to eventually separate the two riders, although Coupe would not be able to narrow the gap Emig had placed. Emig posted his second overall win of the day, again with 1-1 placings, trailed by Coupe (2-2), Ware (4-3), Hansen (3-4) and Klossner (6-5). Emig had the Yamaha-mounted Huffman to contend with in the first 25+ A-class moto, but as it had been most of the day, it went in favor of the Kawasaki rider. Coupe trailed the duo at the finish to snare third ahead of Ware and Suzuki rider Mark Jordan. Things didn't go Huffman's way in moto two, and Emig got a big break when Huffman didn't finish. Coupe collected second overall (2-2) behind Emig's 1-1 sweep (which finalized his three class wins), with Ware notching third with 4-3 perfor- STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, JULY 26-28 early 1500 riders braved a variety of adverse conditions .throughout the three-day Washougal Amateur Days, but it was a pair of Californians that were among the dominant forces at Washougal Motocross Park. Former AMA National and Supercross Champion Jeff Emig proved he hasn't lost much speed since retiring from full-time Professional motocross, winning Friday's 250cc, 25+ and O.ver 30 A classes. Another former factory rider, Donnie Cantaloupi, was the top rider in the competitive 40+ A class on Saturday. Heavy rain overnight had left the track a quagmire, but Cantaloupi soldiered on through the slop to take a win in the class' single-moto format aboard his Yamaha Yl250. The three-class rampage for the Kawasaki-mounted Emig started with his 250cc A class victory on Friday, which featured the majority of the A_ classes. Emig's first moto went off the right way as Emig led from start to finish, beating Kawasaki-mounted Montanan Josh Sawyer and Utah's Bla ke Suitter. Oregon's Ryan Huffman bolted ahead of the second moto and, despite Emig taking the point position away from the Yamaha rider, the race was a close one to the finish. Boughten's overall wins came in the Supermini (12-15) and 80cc (14-15) classes, both coming with 1-1 sweeps. Kawasaki pilot Ricky Yorks trailed Boughten across the finish line in both Supermini-class motos to nab second overall, just ahead of Honda-mounted Montanan Justin Anderson (3-3). Due to the huge amount of 125cc B riders on hand, the 78 riders were split into three divisions. Californians Carson Meyer and leb liganti landed the 1-2 positions in Division One, while a trio of riders with vast track experience filled the top three in Division Two. Tyler Fick won both motos for the overall win ahead of Kyle Versteeg (32) and Joey Mancuso (2-3). The third and final division went to Yamahamounted Califomian Matt Barber. Barber used 2-1 finishes to lead Kiel Krogstadt (1-4) and Craig Smith (3-3) onto the rostrum in the class. One of the first classes to test the muddy conditions on Saturday were the 60cc age-group contestants. KTM rider Tommy Weeck took a win in the single moto ahead of Richard Rinaun of San Jose, California. The lead duo fared much better in the messy conditions, although all riders required outside help from mud-caked spectators and frustrated parents just to maneuver the course. Weeck posted a win in the 60cc (9-11) class, while Red Bluff, Californja's Austin Howell While most of the buzz was about Emig's presence, there were several stellar performers at the first of the three days of racing, including Honda-mounted Washingtonian Tony Boughten.
