Promoters Brad and Laurie Oxley presented a full show, running regular speedway, Junior Speedway, the Mission Yamaha Pee Wee 50s, and a sidecar demonstration by the Jones boys and Joe's swinger/girlfriend, Brandi McElroy. 'Flyin" Mike Faria won the Scratch main, while young Kit Nay collected the Handicap marbles. In the first Scratch semi, Nay drew the pole, with 'Gorgeous' Gary Hicks in two and Josh Larsen and Andy 'The Enforcer' Northrop in three and four. The gate went to Hicks and he held the lead for one lap before Larsen came under him to take the lead and the win in the quick four-Iapper. Hicks would transfer with Larsen to the main, while Northrop and Nay would head for the lastchance qualifier. The second semi had Mark Adams on the pole, with Dukie Ermolenko in two and Ryan Fisher and Faria in three and four. Fisher got the gate but Ermolenko got the lead as they hit the first turn. One lap later, Fisher was back on top, and he stayed there all the way. Ennolenko was second and on his way to the majn. Faria and Adams moved to the LCQ. Faria was on the pole for the LCQ, with Nay in two and Adams and Northrop in three and four. Faria led from start to finish, and the final spot in the main was his. Fisher was on the pole for the Scratch Main. Larsen and Ermolenko were in two and three. On the outside were Hicks and Faria. On the first try, Faria went down in one and the red came out. There were no penalties. In the second try, the gate went to Faria but Ermolenko was on top as they hit the first tum. Faria would not be denied. Fisher got by Ermolenko for second. Larsen and Hicks rounded out the field. Nay and Robbie Sauer shared the 20-yard line as they lined up for the Handicap main. On the were Shawn 'Mad Dog' McConnell, Northrop and Ermolenko. The 50 was also crowded, as Fisher, Faria and Larsen picked their spots. The gate came up and Nay was away, with McConnell running second by the end of one. Ermolenko and Northrup also moved into contention. McConnell tried everything short of a machine gun to get around had secured first place. Larry Fisher flew through traffic, trying to overcome his bad start, and successfully brought his hot Yamaha in with a second-place finish to be proud of. Red came through with third. Competition Park Ward Wards 'em Oft By JOHN BETHEA SAN JACINTO, CA, JUNE 22 A race-long battle for the lead in the very first event was an outstanding beginning to the new six-week Competition Park Friday Night Motocross Series. A couple of Michaels, Vemable and Ward, when the gate fell for the first of three 125<:c Beginners motos, and the two Yamahamounted foes went at it for all they were worth for six of the seven laps. Vernable, who is sponsored by his parents, held a tenuous lead that finally fell to Ward's persistent chailenges just as the white flag flew. Tyler Bailey fmished third, with Ludwig Solberg fourth. Ward again had to push his Big Indiansponsored bike from behind in the second round, but this time it came sooner (on the second lap) against last week's winner, Jim Sivicz, who had wallowed in a disappointing fifth place during the entire first moto. Relegated to second, Sivicz stayed there. Solberg, on his Yamaha of Cucamonga machine. paced himself in third. Vemable placed fourth. This set up a showdown in moto three for second place, between Vemable and Solberg for the runner-up finish, as Ward again took over the lead on lap two of the third moto and went on for a sweep. Vernable led early, only to fall by the waYSide, giving Solberg the opening he needed to record second in the moto, which was the tie breaker in his favor, as they both finished with a 2-3-4 showing. Showing signs that he was a series contender in two classes with victories in recent weeks, Scott Noble did indeed live up to expectations, taking both the 80cc Beginner and 60cc (9-11) class wins in a clean sweep. His 60cc triumph on the Madnum Perfor- mance Kawasaki came at the expense of his brother Garrick, who placed second, and Competition Park veteran Tommy Madden, who has two championships and a runner-up finish in the last three series here. Jason Erler pulled' off wire-to-wire wins in the first two 250cc Beginner motos over his fellow Honda rider Armondo Garcia, which took the pressure off in the third moto when Garcia attacked hard and took the lead. A runner-up finish was all Erler needed in that finale to take the overall, and that's exactly where he stuck himself for the entire seven tours of the track. Chad Munn, who had a heart-breaking loss last Friday night when he stalled in the final turn in the wrap-up contest of the evening, crashed hard in the first mota on this night. tweaking hjs collar bone C51nd retiring early. Competition Park Zayas Zaps 'em By JOHN BETHEA SAN JACINTO, CA, JUNE 29 There were three different 125cc Beginners mota winners at the second round of the CMC/Competition Park Friday Night Motocross Series. and it wound up going to the tie-breaking third-moto finish order to decide the winner. Louis Zavas, making his first appearance of the year at the park, rode like a veteran of the track in the initial mota, in which he scored a stunning victory over Michael Venable. The parent-sponsored Venable held the lead on his Yamaha from the drop of the gate until the white flag was about to come out. That's when Zavas managed to squeeze his Kawasaki by for the lead. Jim Sivecz, aboard a Yamaha, had been in a race-long battle with the pair, running third, but he was unable to get by, and he settled for third. Venable again captured the holeshot and the early lead the second time out, but this time he wouldn't yield to anyone, scoring a 1 on his results board sheet after spending much of the race holding off 125cc Junior front-runner Ryan Mcintyre, on the Race Tech Honda, who finally passed to win the race overall, though he was scored separately. Meanwhile, Zavas started off in sixth, but a miscue prevented him ITom makjng any major comeback efforts and he wound up fourth at the checkers, behind Yamaha of Redland's Honda rider Jim Edmonds in second and Paradise Reality's Yamaha-mounted Sean Crigler in third. The final mota, which wound up being very important as a tie breaker, was taken not by the first two winners but instead by last week's winner Michael Ward, on the Big Indian Yamaha, after he finally settled down after two disappointing races. Ward, however. was too late to do much overall, even though he scored the impressive victory, taking the lead from Venable on the second lap and not looking back. Venable gave up the overall when he crashed on that second trip around Competition Park's stadium-style track, leaving him in fourth piace and tied with Zavas, who recorded a second to Ward. Kick in the tie breaker and Zavas got the nod. Edmonds, despite a sixth and a fifth to go along with his second-moto place position, gamered third in the trophy line. Pleasure Riders Hillclimb Fortner Flies to Pleasure Riders He Win By BUD NORTHRUP CAYUGA, IN, JUNE 23 "Fast Andy" Fortner demonstrated once again how he earned his nickname, as he flew his CR500 high and far over the top of the Pleasure Riders' 150-foot hill in a startling 3.748 seconds to take the win in the 600cc class and the beautiful Fast Time trophy and the $100 that went with it. Fortner had to come from behind to pull it off, however. as Paul Hackbarth had taken the first-round lead in the 600cc class with a 4.043second time on his Honda, and "Wild Wade" Schultz had delivered a sizzling 3.793-second run on his Yamaha twin in the 750cc class to set the first-round overall fast time. Randy Trosper, Jared McKay and District 15 hillc1irnb referee Scott Petty joined Fortner in the three-second bracket in the 600<:c class to take the next three places, with 'Ughtning" Lane Schultz taking fifth with a 4.oo3-second run. Mark Goodman Jr. joined the three-second club with a 3.823-second time on his Kawasaki triple to put pressure on Schultz in the 750cc class. Tom 'Wild Child' Daniels saw his streak of five stra ight Fast Times broken and had to settle for a third-place finish with a 4.054-second run on his Kawasaki triple. Lane Schultz and Boots Weber filled out the top five places. Matt Peters enjoyed a double-win evening, taking the honors in the 250cc and 400cc classes. He also came from behind in the 250cc class as his first-round 4.483-second run was well behind Donnie Barber Jr., who shot his CR250 over the top in an excellent 4.168 seconds. In second-round action, however, Peters held his power on a bit longer and stopped the timer in 4.167 seconds on his Honda, snatching the win from Barber by the narrowest of margins -a mere one-thousandth of a second. Goodman, Jon Creek and Cody Jenner filled in the next three spots. Peters also had to work hard for the 400cc-class win. His 4.144-second first-run time would not have held up for the win, as Paul Hacbarth knocked down an excellent 4.010-second run on hjs second ride on his KTM 360 to take the class lead. Peters responded with a fistful of throttle on his KTM 380 and joined the three-second club with a 3.988-second run to take the class win from Hackbarth. Marcus Brown, Ron Todd and Paul Hillard rounded out the top five. Wade Schultz was also a double winner, as he claimed the Open Pushrod-class win to go with his 750<:c victory. Running his hot Harley, Schultz took only one ride, his 4.012-second first-round effort holding up for the win. Scott Sheets Jr. topped the hill in 4.273 seconds for second place, with Steve Shafer and Tim Wiggins running third and fourth. Results 50 AUTO: 1. Donnie Robbins (Cob): 2. Dyllln Brady (Pol): 3.
