"I made sure I got back in behind him, and once I got out front, I tried to keep Hageman behind me, but I bobbled in the far section of the track and gave him an opportunity." Third went to Jeff Pestana, who, after getting by traffic, showed good speed and began to reel in Boothe. However, the speedy veteran found the 15-lap race just a few laps too short to make the pass. Rounding out the top five were Billy Jurevich and Truglio. The 125cc Intermediate class featured two good motos between series dominator Doug Schmid and Yamaha of Modesto-backed Eric McCrummen. In his first race back after healing up from a badly broken leg, McCrummen turned in a well-earned 1-1 score after back-to-back battles with Schmid. While Schmid took the early lead in both motos, McCrummen managed to make last-lap passes in both motos for the victories. McCrummen's best effort came in the second moto, in which he overcame a fifth-place start and chased down Schmid, who had made a gutsy pass, barely squeezing through two riders entering the second turn, to take the lead. While Schmid quickly distanced the field, McCrummen put on an incredible charge that saw him gaining time in bunches on Schmid. On the last lap, Schmid protected an inside line that forced him to single while McCrummen went wide and doubled, taking the lead and the eventual win. t:N AMP/GFI Los Banos iJp Gun Summercross Series Round 3: Los Banos Fairgrounds Hageman Goes for the Hat Trick By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS LOS BANOS, CA, JUNE 30 man of very few words, Harold Hageman let his Fox/FMF/ Bridgestone Tires-backed Harold Hageman nearly scored a trio of victories at round three of the Los Banos Top Gun Summercross Series, held at the Los Banos Fairgrounds. Hageman won not only the 250cc Pro class but also the highlight of the evening, the Top Gun Shootout main event. A fall in moto two of the 125cc Pro class foiled Hageman's chances at the hat trick, as Yamaha of Modesto/TMR/ Spy pilot Craig Truglio turned in a 3-2 score for the overall win, barely edging out Hageman's 1-4 effort. Still, the quiet Hollister resident was all smiles at the end of the evening after collecting a healthy night's pay from both Pro classes, as well as the Top Gun Shootout mainevent purse and passing money. "I would have liked to have won them all tonight," Hageman said, "but at least I won the most important one. Starting from the last spot in the A Shootout is tough, but luckily I was able to get through the field quickly and not get hung up behind anybody. 1 do a few hare scrambles every year, and there are always bottlenecks early in the race. I think those races help me out in getting by people." The AMP-promoted event drew more than 300 riders and, thus far in the series, each event has seen an increase in attendance. "We brought a lot of sand in initially and continue to get loads each week," said promoter Jack Azevedo. "Along with the improvement in lighting, I think the word has gotten out that it's a good track." The Top Gun main event featured some of the fastest local NorCal Pros, as well a few of the night's fastest Intermediates. Although Hageman took the win with a little room to spare, Yamaha £, Suzuki Sports Center-backed David Boothe did his best to keep him honest by taking the lead early on, despite a second-lap offtrack excursion. "Some guy cut me off on the approach to the finish-line jump and I was forced off the track," said Las Banas Fairgrounds Las Banos, California Results: June 3D, 2001 [Round 31 "--=-----:-::"---------'''' o _r-~.....""'_"--w"_"----~~ __ z w '>" => a> ~ Q.
