Club Moto The Return of Crazy Larry By KAREN GOULD UVERMORE, CA, JUNE 30 Club Moto in Livermore, California, hosted a District 36 short-track event, and the first excitement of the day was provided by the Pee Wee 50cc Stock AlB racers. Bobby Caldeira was seemingly on his way to victory, leading the race by a long way, when he fell; he eventually finished second, behind fellow Yamaha rider James Williams. When Club Moto introduced the Pee Wee 80cc class early this season, there were only two contestants - Kaylyn and Chivon Crump. This week, the Pee Wee aocc class had eight riders. Stephan Sikorski finished first, with Kaylyn Crump, on her Yamaha, behind him. Rotax rider Marty Weisler took the Open A victory in front of six other riders. Jeremy Hannah finished second. Celebrating his 16th birthday, the Mallott's Honda - Ya ma halW isecolMother' s Polishes/Union 76/Edge Sports Racing-sponsored Nick Moore rode a great race on his Rotax to finish with the Pro-Am victory. He was followed across the line by Honda pilot Jeremy Hannah. Lany Andres of San Carlos, California, has retumed to the short tracks of District 36, and he scored the Vet A win on his A&A Racingbacked Yamaha 360, despite coming from the cheater's box. Andres started his riding career when he was just 4 years old. As a youngster in the early 1970s, he became the numberone black plate in the aocc Modified class. He reappeared in the early '90s, riding at R&D Speedway and celebrating many victories in the Outlaw races. In 1991, Andres had to stop riding because his addiction to alcohol was taking over his life. In 1996, Andres once again returned to racing, riding with many of the legends of the district, including the late Rob Damron and Andy Tresser. Andres con· "..,...----,,=-__- __- - _ - - - - tested anything and everything - hare scram· bles, motocross, flat track. In the mid- 1990s, "Crazy Larry" was suspended from the AMA and AHRMA for riding while intoxicated. By the end of 1997, he found himself, in his words. "penniless, shoeless and homeless" and living behind a car wash in San Carlos, hopelessly addicted to drugs and alcohol. Thanks 10 District 36 steward Ralph Lees, who orchestrated Andres' suspension, and to another homeless man. Andres found his way to Project 90, a residential recovery program for men in San Mateo, Califomia. He spent 14 months there. learning about his disease and learning how to live, one day at a time, with· out alcohol and drugs. Andres went to work at a local toy store and started saving his money. In just two short years, Andres opened Old School Auto Body, purchased a home, and recently bought a Rotax, which he is looking forward to riding. He celebrated two years of sobriety on July 4. Don Fike (Hon). COVINGTON, TN, JULY 1 If you're looking for tea and sympathy from Danny Akins and his green machine. you might as well trailer your bike and take a hike. As an elite member of the "old and forever fast" class, Akins comes to a track for one thing, and one thing only: to win. This was the case at the increasingly poplar Hidden Valley MX Park, just north of Memphis, Tennessee, on the first day of July. Gating his Kawasaki against some of the region's "old and forever fast" statesmen, Akins took on the likes of Ronnie Ray, Mike Taylor, Michael West and Don Fike in the Over 40 class. From the time the gate dropped to the waving of the checkers, Akins was out front and in charge. Even though the years are beginning to click by for Akins, he still exhibited the style and grace of a serious motocross contender. He took across-the· board wins in the Over 40 and Over 30 contests, sweeping both classes for the day and taking home the top honors in a double·c1ass massacre. In the younger classes, two contestants stood out as the honchos of the day: Joshua Box and Branden Miller. Box, contesting the 60cc Open and 60cc (7-9) classes, whipped his tweaked Kawasaki around Hidden Valley as though he was a junior version of Danny Akins. In the 60cc Open contest, Box took the early lead in both motos and made Hidden Valley his own, riding as though there was no one else on the track. He won both motos easily. In the 60cc (7-9) class, Box felt a little pressure early on from Spencer Cook and Alex Ray. As the race wore on, Box shook off Cook and Ray and once again made the track his own. He swept both classes and was one happy little motocrosser when he went to collect hjs trophies. Fisherville, Tennessee's Miller, aboard his Sarge's Cycle Yamaha, displayed the talent that gained him a shot at Loretta's this year by severely outgunning the entire troop of contes· tants in both the aocc (7 -11) and Supermini classes. Andrew Wisdom chased Miller in the Supermini class, but over the course of the five-lap race Miller began to pull away from Wisdom and the pack. Miller swePt both classes and pocketed the top podium spot twice for the day. cue I • Perris Raceway Little Big Winner By KENNY MORRIS PERRIS, CA, JUNE 30 Tyler UttIe scored a 2-1 finish, which gave him the big overall win in the 60cc Beginner class at round three of The Temecula Motorsports Hot Summer Night Series at Perris Raceway. Perris Raceway officials have been very pleased by the turnout thus far in the Hot Summer Night Series. The large amount of Mini riders who continue to race has made for some exciting racing. The 60cc Beginners lined up on the gate. When the gate dropped, Cody Espudo pulled off a picture-perfect holeshot. He was followed by Little and Ryan Byrd. Little tried to sneak to the inside of Espudo through a left-handed sweeper, but Espudo denied his effort. In third, Byrd was feeling pressure from Caden Probst. Byrd approached the whoop section and Probst grabbed a handful of throttle, which allowed him to make the pass through the whoops. Meanwhile, Espudo continued to ride a great race in the lead.
