As was the case all day, the B Division began with a modified Le Mans start that had the riders facing their dead-engined bikes. Eric Ashley quickly moved to the lead, ahead of Jason Annstrong. The pair fonned a Honda freight train that motored away from the other riders and maintllined the same order throughout the four-lap event. Despite his unfamHiarity with the 3.7 -mile course, Ashley cruised to a three-minute victory, while Armstrong fell off the leader's pace and was content with protecting his second-place finish. Rounding out the podium was Rich Simmons, another CR250 rider who put in a strong showing despite being unaccustomed to traversing the hjdden roots, lava rocks, and branches that were unusually dry for a rain forest that receives 15 feet of precipitation each year. The daylong event started with a combined field of kids and women that had riders on fullsized bikes racing against minibikes, which proved to be fiercely competitive on the course that favored skill and finesse over speed and horsepower. In the female division, Heather Harold held off challengers Kahili Hahn and Twila Ashley, who used the same bike her husband, Eric, piloted to the win in the B Division. Josh Mayeda topped Ian Robledo and Eric Lau to capture the checkered flag in the Under 15 Division. In a battle of the islandis future stars, Joseph Harold finished first, followed by Kyle Shuman and Beau Dedeir, on 65cc-andsmaller bikes. At the end of the rain-free day, both the promoters and the racers realized they had achieved an unusual feat: racing dirt bikes on public land located midway between Kilauea Volcano's active flows and a black·sand beach that skirts the town of Hilo, known as the wettest city in America and home to motorcycling enthusiasts who would not live or race anywhere else. man (KTM). 200 A: I. Clement Stampede Grounds Perri Lunges to the Win Bv KAREN GOOLD CLEMENT, CA, JUNE 24 The Clement Stampede Grounds, just seven miles from Lodi, hosted their first District 36 event on Sunday, June 24. Newcomers and seasoned riders alike enjoyed the eighth-mile track, due to the nice cushion that makes it possible to pass using the whole track. Motowest and Rab Racing Products worked well together, creating a fun event for both specta- Kulani Rain Forest Ripping Through the Rain Forest BY JASON M. ARMSTRONG HILO, HI, JUNE 24 Racing off-road motorcycles on the slopes of an active volcano can only be topped by routing the coarse through a Hawaiian rain forest. That unique setting challenged the 32 riders who competed in the Kulani Fun Run hare scrambles on the Big Island of Hawaii. Using a portion of the trail network that was previously part of the infamous Mauna Kea 200, the course featured a mixture of first-gear single-track along with a few fast fire roads thrown in to link the woods sections and give the spectators a sample of the action. Capturing the A Division was enduro veteran Phil Overland, who motored to the front during the first of four laps on the 5.7 -mile course and never relinquished the lead. After making his way around a slower rider, multi· time Mauna Kea 200 winner Steve Zoll charged hard and was gaining on leader Overland when a flat rear tire - a problem that hampered many riders on the rocky, technical course - forced his KTM 200 EXC back to the pits, ending his day. Following Overland, who punctured the front tire on his KTM 200 EXC at the end of the last lap, was Daryl Vierra, who put in consistent lap times and used his 60 AUGUST 8, 2001 • cue I tors and riders. Club Moto's Jesse Ochoa worked diligently throughout the day with water and tractor to keep the track in good riding condition and Rab Racing Products' Bob Bacosa's efforts were evident in the quality of the food and program. The gates open early and there's plenty of grandstand seating. The first-place trophies for the Open A, B and C events at Clements were provided by Mike Vail Racing and Riddle Racing and were quite impressive, standing almost five feet tall. One of the most fun events of the day was a "Knobby" class of riders that included Barry Olson/Flat Track Fabrications' Dana Perri, Ochoa, Malott's Honda- Yamaha/Wiseco/ Mother's Polishes/Union 76/Edge Sports Racing-backed Nick Moore, Danny Casey and Jon Eicheibaugh. Off the line, Ochoa was in the lead, and Perri found himself somewhere in the back of the pack in the first tum. Perri quickly began his charge, passing every rider in front of him to be first across the finish line, followed by Ochoa. This is nothing new to Perri. The Open A contest was a full 20-lap event, with a nine-rider field. The pace was fast and the dirt was flying. Riddle Racing's Jimmy Sanchez, riding a Husaberg, took the lead about halfway through after Frank Garcia (who came out of retirement to ride this track) came off the line in front. As the race progressed, there was a corner·to-corner battle between Sanchez, Corsetti and Garcia. Sanchez c1ajmed another victory, one full bike length ahead of the second-placed rider. Sanchez also placed first earlier in the program's Dash For Cash. Yamaha-mounted Johnny Larson finished first in the Open B, Late-Model Vintage and Vet B races. It was "his day" at the track. John Frank was first in the A/B Vintage 250cc contest. Steve Bonsey also had a great day of racing, winning both his heat and the final in the 80cc A class. Bonsey finished half a lap ahead of runner-up Joseph Hemandez. Results P/W STK 50 A: 1. Michael Martin (YlHfl) PfW STK 50 B: 1. Jamel Willlami (Yam); 2. Jak~ Strong (Yam). P/W STK 50 C: I.
