Thunder Mountain Hoenshell Tackles the Mountain By JENNIFER WEBB RUSK, TX, JUNE 30·JULY I Thunder Mountain had a little more to offer to TCCRA members than the other venues this year. "It was different," said senior scoring coordinator Micheile Cook. "The TCCRA guys racing on the flat track was something to see, and the fireworks were pretty decent for an out-of-the-way racetrack." As for the cross country trail, rain had track officials working overtime, from cutting out a deep mud section Saturday night to rerouting an off-camber section during the amateur races Sunday morning. The off-camber section got so clogged up with racers somewhere between 50 and 100 of them that some of them just quit, some went back to camp to wait, and others waited in line some 10 to 15 minutes, sweating it out, hoping to not be lapped. In the 125/200cc Intermediate class, 15year-old Robert Lambert took his third win in a row since transferring from the 125cc Amateur class, moving to within 46 points of Rob Cook for the overall lead. Lambert's 18-yearold brother Jeremy also received his third win in a row, in the Open Amateur class, moving to within eight points of Kevin Morris in the overall standings. "Dad is going to build us a new trophy room'" Robert exclaimed when asked what they were going to do with all their trophies. Afternoon racers were definitely at an advantage when it came to track conditions. The rain had ceased for hours and problem areas had been fixed. "I got the holeshot," recounted Cycle Town/Moose/Suomy Helmets/Scott/Michelinsponsored Clay Hoenshell. "Then, about halfway through the first lap, I overshot a turn and went out in the weeds. That's when Haydn IFranklln) got around me. I followed him for about another lap and a half; then a lapped rider took him out. I stopped to make sure they were all right; then I never saw Franklin again. It started to rain sometime during the eye I e fourth lap and didn't stop... The track got slick on the uphills and downhills. but overali about 80 percent of it was just fine." Hoenshell's win increased his lead in the overall standings to 80 points over Franklin. Silkolene/Answer/SMS Racing's Oliver Benetis had his best finish of the year so far, with a third-place shOWing among the Pros. The 28-year-old Benetis has been racing in various classes within TCCRA since he was 15. "I love the mud, the technical and tighter tracks, so it felt good to me." Benetis said. "' got past [MarkJ Weeks in the woods on about the fifth iap, and [Brian] Storrie let me by at the checkpoint. I felt good about third place, since I started dead last." Benetis' best friend, Jeremy Fipps, broke his collarbone at the start of the last race in Jacksboro. When Benetis found out, he decided to DNF that race as weli, and he missed his buddy at this race. "It's just not the same without him out there with me." Results P/W 50 11M: 1. Chase Reynolds (Hon): 2. J.D. Reed (Lem); 3. Derek Bagley (Yam); 4. John Short IV (KTM); 5. Troy A. Sanford (KTM).
