STORY AND PHOTOS BY PETE EMME KAUKAUNA, WI, JUNE 24 ound four of the popular Northern Cup MX Series was run on the manmade stadiumcross-style track at Fox Valley Greyhound Park. More than 400 entrants carved through the jump-infested track, vying for huge trophies and healthy paybacks, including contingencies from major factories including American Honda. Salem, Wisconsin's Dave Oettel cashed in big on the Honda contingency by capturing four moto wins and two overalls in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes. The DGY Hondasupported rider worked his way to the front quickly and checked out in all motos as he put on a riding clinic for the fans and riders. Yamaha rider Dan Weinkauf shot out of the inside gate to the first corner in 125cc Junior competition, with Dustin Hoffman (no, not the actor) following. Kawasaki jockey Scott Zont moved past Hoffman over the infield triple for second. Weinkauf led Zont through the uphill whoop section and over the 70-foot spectator triple on lap one. Zont was right on Weinkauf through the switchbacks, and Weinkauf made a mistake, going down in the tall whoop section and handing the lead to Zont. Hoffman took over second, with Weinkauf remounting in fourth. Zont quickly pulled out to an eight-bike-Iength lead, but Weinkauf immediately put on a charge, moving into third over the triple by the end of the second lap. He soon pulled even with Hoffman along the infield 60-foot double and passed him in the tight switchback. Zont now only had a five-bikelength lead over Weinkauf with a lap to go. Zont went to the inside of the bowl turn before the double, losing a bit of ground to Weinkauf as he went to the outside. They entered the whoops a bike length apart, with Zont on the outside and Weinkauf taking IAbove) Scott Zont (223) got the jump on the lHcc B pack, but Dan Weinkauf (32) went 2-1 for the overall. Zont had a heated battle in the lHcc Junior contest but ended up going 7·1 for second overall. (Left) Eric Weise used his high· flying antics to win the ultracompetitlve Sportsman class. (Below) Tyler Smulclers convincingly won the HOcc B contest with 1-1 scores. R 48 AUGUST 8, 2001 • c: U c: I the deeper line through the middle. Zont came out ahead and hit the infield triple with Weinkauf on his tail. A lapper was sitting on the outside of the corner; Zont nearly ran into him, and Weinkauf dived to the inside, clipping Zont's front' tire and sending the leader to the ground. Weinkauf had nothing but clear track ahead of him and a few corners left for the first-moto win. Zont tried desperately to fire his motor back up and fmally did, catching up to the pack and finishing seventh. Hoffman settled for a well-deserved second, and Garrett Hojnacki rounded out the top three. Weinkauf and Hojnacki tangled in the first corner in the second moto. The two remounted way in back, while Zont pulled out a holeshot, with Matthew Mraz and Hoffman in tow. Hojnacki and Weinkauf made an impressive charge through the pack, finishing the first lap in seventh and ninth, respectively. On lap two, Weinkauf made a pass that moved him into seventh, over Hojnacki. e n e _ os Zont got the holeshot in the first 125cc B moto, over Weinkauf and Northern Cup points leader Tyler Smulders. Weinkauf moved by Zont through the turn. Smulders got past Zont on the switchback and set his sights on Weinkauf, who bobbled badly in the whoops, and Smulders powered by for the lead. Zont fell off the pace during the third lap. Smulders checked out with the win, over Weinkauf. Zont settled for third, with Eric Weise fourth. Zont again had his Kawasaki dialed in for the holeshot in the second moto. Weise worked his way into second, with Smulders third. Weinkauf was fourth, hounding Smulders; he pulled into third and then battled with Weise, but Weise kept second over the infield triple. Weinkauf looked to have a good line through the uphill whoops and eventually made the pass stick over the spectator jump, moving into second and pulling ahead of Weise past the double leading to the straightaway. After the whoops, Weinkauf made an old-fashioned block-pass on Zont for the lead, pushing him high into the corner. On the final lap, Smulders passed Zont for second but couldn't catch Weinkauf for the lead. Weinkaufs 2-1 tally garnered the overall. Smulders (1-2) took second overall. Zont (3-3) finished third overall. CN Fox Valley Greyhound Park Kaukauna, Wisconsin Resulb: June 24, 2001 [Round 41 WMN: 1. Angie Keuntjes; 2. April Bosworth; 3. Kimberly Wilcheck; 4. Weinkauf was tearing it up through the whoops and sailing over the infield triple, passing his way into fourth, but then he lost it through a bowl turn before the back straightaway, remounting in 10th and finishing in eighth. Zont cruised to an easy victory but ended up with scores of 7 -1 for second overall. The ever-consistent Hoffman went 2-2 for the overall. Hojnacki (3-6) was third. Weinkauf (1-8) was fourth overall.
