SANDERSON BINGHAMTON, NY, JULY 4 M ore than 500 of the Nor3theast's best motocross riders decided to celebrate Independence Day at round five of the Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Motocross Series, hosted by Tom Hurd Motorsports at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center. Rider turnout was excellent for a race held on a weekday, but Mother Nature had other ideas and decided to cut the celebration short by sending thunderstorms, along with torrential downpours, to the Binghamton, New York, metropolitan area. The race program was eventually stopped after only nine of the 25 classes got to ride their second moto. The 125cc and 250cc Open Expert riders had the opportunity to ride the full National track. Nationally ranked local riders Barry Carsten, Paul Carpenter and Aaron Dieter were on hand to get some track time on the National course in preparation for the upcoming National held at Broome-Tioga in late August. Carpenter, aboard the big KTM 520cc four-stroke, thumped his way to the win in the 250cc Open Expert class. Dieter earned third overall and Carsten was sixth overall. In the highly competitive 125cc Expert class, Paul Veracka battled with Ryan Mills in the first moto, just edging out Mills for the moto win, with Dieter finishing third. Veracka managed to make it a perfect day with another moto win, this time over Dieter, with Mills finishing a strong sixth. Veracka's perfect 1-1 rides earned him the overall, with Dieter second with 3-2 rides. Mills' 2-6 tally got him the final spot on the 125cc Expert podium. Bromley Suzuki's Carsten rode to a perfect 1-1 tally in the Senior Expert class, ahead of Gaylon Dickson and John Young. Carsten now leads the class in series points, but only by one point over Boyesen Engineering's Dag Boyesen after five of seven rounds. Young Team Suzuki pilot Bob Kiniry flew in from California to ride round five of the Classic at BroomeTioga. Kiniry won the highly competitive Schoolboy class and finished a strong second in the Senior Mini class, behind a superfast local rider, Kawasaki Team Green's Scotty Sears. Carpenter nailed the holeshot on his big KTM thumper in the first 250cc Open Expert moto and never looked back, riding wire to wire unchallenged. Unfortunately, the rest remounted third. Nighman held on for the moto win, with Bloch, Mowry, . Vanorden and Colavita in tow. Nighman earned the top spot on the 250cc Open Amateur podium. Rounding out the podium were Bloch and Mowry. Trailing Carpenter out of the first turn were Dieter, Mills, Stephen Desiderio and Veracka. When the top five appeared at the top of the National hill, Carpenter remained out front, while Mills had made his way around Dieter for second. Veracka moved up to fourth, and Young rounded out the top five. On lap two, the top three were unchanged, while Joe Fontana and Gaylon Dickson moved up to fourth and fifth. On the following lap, the top three were again unchanged, with Dickson moving up to fourth and Desiderio fifth. Carpenter had a six-second lead by the start of lap four. The top four remained unchanged, with Veracka making his way back into the top five. Halfway through lap four, Veracka caught and passed Dickson for fourth. The top five were spread out for the remaining laps and the moto went in the record books as Carpenter, Mills, Dieter, Veracka and Dickson. Carpenter earned the top tier of the 250cc Open Expert podium. Mills earned second and Dieter third. Gene C. Nighman led the pack out of the first turn in the first 250 Open Amateur moto, with Nick Mowry, Zach Bloch, Rich White and Dylan Vanorden trailing.
