STORY AND PHOTOS BY ROBERT VAN DAMME TUCSON, AZ, JUNE 23 aylor Roberts and Clay Higgins took double wins in their respective classes at the fifth round of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Series, presented by Mel Clayton, FMF, Gordy's, AEO, Franklin and Bent. Roberts took the overall in the 60cc (9-11) and 60cc Open classes, while Higgins garnered the top spot in the 80cc (12-13) and Supermini divisions. Some 254 racers participated on the Roger Jones-designed track, using the rodeo arena at the Pima County Fairgrounds. Jeffrey Jenkins pulled the holeshot in the first 60cc Open moto, followed by David Archey and Roberts. Roberts passed Archey at the end of the grandstand straight for second. Then Roberts went around Jenkins for the lead. Trey Adamson got by Archey on the start sweeper for third. Then, while applying pressure to Archey, Dougie Wang stalled his bike and dropped back, finishing ninth. Paul DeSoto went by Adamson in the infield section for fourth. Then Archey laid his bike down in turn one, handing third to DeSoto. Archey repassed DeSoto on the final lap. Roberts won the moto, followed by Jenkins, Archey, DeSoto, Adamson and Brodie Prather. In moto two, Jenkins had the lead, but Roberts took over as they came out of the "hole" section. DeSoto held third, trailed by Archey and Adamson. On lap three, Archey slid out on the start sweeper and fell back. On the next lap, Jenkins laid his bike down in turn one and had trouble refiring, finishing in ninth. The T 44 AUGUST 8, 2001 • cue I had the lead, with Higgins, Alex Haag, Alex Buzzard, Kevin Stultz and Kyle Raimonde in pursuit. Jones held the lead for two laps but then stumbled coming out of a corner, allowing Higgins to pass for the lead. By lap two, White had moved up to fourth. Haag went down with two laps to go and had to settle for seventh. Higgins won the moto, over Jones, White, Buzzard, Stultz and Raimonde. Higgins nailed the holeshot in the second moto, followed by White, Buzzard, Stultz, Joe Rogers and Haag. Jones got hung up in the start gate and started in last place. On lap two, Rogers and Haag passed Stultz in the bleacher section. White passed Higgins for the lead at the finish-line jump. Then Haag went down in the infield section and would finish eighth. Jones passed Raimonde in the "hole" for sixth. White pulled away from Higgins for the moto win, but Higgins took the overall. Third was Buzzard, with Rogers, Stultz, Jones and Raimonde rounding out the top seven. In the Supermini contest, Higgins pulled the moto-one holeshot, with White and Ranel Cox in tow, followed by David Noriega, Buzzard, Stultz, Roberts and Jones. By lap four, Noriega was succumbing to the pressure, allowing Buzzard and Roberts to go by. On the next lap, Roberts passed Buzzard in the infield section for (Right) Jeffrey Jenkins (801) kept pulling holeshots In both the 60cc Open and 60cc (9-11) classes, but Roberts would pass Jenkins each time for the wins. Thor/Spy/One/Motion Pro-sponsored Roberts secured the moto win; DeSoto took second, followed by Adamson, Prather and Case Hirshberg. The 80cc (14-16) and (12-13) classes were run in split gates, with the 14- to 16-year-olds starting first. Higgins' rival Austin White made the mistake of leaving in the first wave. White realized his error and turned back to the gate, but by the time he got back into position, the second wave had already started. Kyle Jones • n e wv s fourth. Higgins held on for the win, over White and Cox. The top three pulled 10 seconds clear of Roberts, Buzzard, Jones, Noriega and Haag. In moto two, Roberts took the lead, but Higgins and Roberts got tangled up, letting White take over first. Higgins recovered and held down second. Then bad luck struck White on the final lap, as a lapper went down in the "hole" and White ran over the fallen motorcycle and went down. The Smith/Sunstar/Thor-sponsored Hig- gins won the moto, followed by Roberts, White, Buzzard and Cox. Jenkins led the first 60cc (9-11) moto, with Roberts in second. Roberts passed Jenkins for the lead coming through the infield. Wang held down third, followed by Archey, DeSoto and Prather. Jenkins went down on lap three, letting several riders go by before resuming in seventh. DeSoto passed Archey for third in the grandstand section. On the white-flag lap, Jenkins passed Prather for fifth. Roberts won, followed by Wang, DeSoto, Archey, Jenkins and Prather. Jenkins led again in the second moto, but Roberts passed for the lead by lap one.
