Fincher retumecl to score the 125cc A victory as well. (Right) Jase Lewis looked smooth and stylish en route to scoring top honors in the 85cc (7-11) Junior Mini division and the Youth class. (Below) J.J. Pecsok made the trip from Texas to Tallassee, Alabama, pay off by taking the wins in both the 125cc Band 250cc B classes. By STEVE AND PEGGY CORLEE PHOTOS BY PEGGY COR LEE TALLASSEE, AL, JaNE 30·JaLY I osh Fincher showed that his recent move up to the A class was right on time as he dominated both the 125cc and 250cc A classes at the second annual Ponca City Qualifier held at Alabama's beautiful Monster Mountain Motocross Park. Despite challenges from Illinois' Justin Pries, Fincher handily won all four motos on the day. Equally dominant in the B classes, Texas' J.J. Pecsok was on fire all day as he took wins in the Schoolboy, 125cc Band 250cc B classes. Monster Mountain once again proved to be a truly all-weather track. A deluge of rain on Friday night, coming on top of several days of rain prior to the weekend, had no effect whatsoever, as track conditions were perfect all weekend. The Monster Mountain crew, headed up by track builder Greg Cole, did a super job of prepping the course, and neither dust nor mud affected racing at all. Ponca City, for the most part, means minicyc1e racing, and the action in the small-bore classes was hot, with a large group on hand, trying to qualify. The 85cc division featured several great battles. Alabama's Jesse Van Patten was impressive as he won both the Senior Mini class and the 85cc (12-13) class. Van Patten's win in the latter class didn't come easily; he battled bar to bar with Yamahamounted Blake Massey all day and j managed to squeak by with the overall via a second-moto win. Equally impressive was Freewheeling Honda rider Jase Lewis, who easily topped the Junior Mini and Youth classes. The 65cc classes were the sole property of Georgia riders, as Preston Thomas put his KX in front of the 65cc (7 -9) division and the 65cc (10-11) class belonged to KTM's Taylor Johnson. Alabama's Byron Dillard was the man to beat in the 50cc classes. He topped both the Oil-Injected class and the 50cc (4-6) class. Action in the larger-displacement classes was also interesting. In addition to Fincher's double wins in the A classes and Pecsok's win over fellow Texan Jason Gaddis in the 125cc B and 250cc B classes, several other classes featured terrific battles. Fourstroke ace Chase Livingston topped the 250cc C field with come-frombehind rides. Alabama's Joshua Aaron put his YZ out front each moto, only to succumb to pressure from a determined T.e. Lightsey in moto one and Livingston in moto two. Lightsey was in line for the overall after his firstmoto win but went down in moto two while battling with Livingston for second place. Lightsey's crash then freed Livingston to pursue the rapidly disappearing Aaron, and he was able to not only catch up but make the pass at moto's end for the overall win. The 125cc C class featured another battle royal, but consistency was not the theme of the day. Tennessee's Travis Wormsley took the overall win with a 2-2 finish after firstmoto winner Curt Ward could only manage 12th place in moto two. Suzuki-mounted Jonathan West put a second-moto win together with a first-moto fifth-place finish for second overall. Third went to Alabama's Shane Mills (4-4). In the Vet classes, Honda -mounted Rodney Cavendar topped the Over 30 class, Steve Swicord took his fourstroke to the Over 35 win, Bill Matthews topped the Over 40 class, and Mississippi's Steve Speights continued to be undefeated in the Masters Over 48 class. eN Monster Mountain MotocnIss Part< Tollasse., A1abUlo R.sults: Jun. 3D-July 1, 2001 Saturday 50 OIL·INJ; I.
