The 6 00c c Supersport w in w ent to the K ing of the class, M ig uel DuHamel. Miguel [DuHamel] , but he went under a lapper and I tried to go around him. The guy put me on the rip p le strip . Tom m y [Hayden] went by and I had t o s t u ff him. It threw my whole rhy thm off, and then lout-b raked m yse lf. I wa s s o a ngry . I th oug ht I could win the ra ce, or at least fin ish second . Migu el rod e gr eat and he deserves it, but I'm disappointed ." Hayden hung in to the finish , los ing out to DuHame l b y just .4 of a second with Bostrom a rel ieved third , Ro be rts fourth and Gobert fifth. "We came in here really strong ," DuHa m e l said. "We had a little brake problem a t Lagun a S e c a. For s om e reason we got a way fro m ou r se tup a littl e bit after Sea rs Po int , and I th ink we tried to get a little too creative and it rea lly cost us a lot. We loo ke d at th e notes a nd we nt ba c k to o ur Sea rs Point se tup , and a ll we ek end I fe lt rea lly good . I got a rea lly good start beh ind Jamie Hacking the re . Anthony was d o ing a really good jo b o n the brakes with his broken wrist, goi ng in there good , but he was a little weak through the esses." DuHa m e l we nt on to describe his off- track incident. "The one mo me n t I was b e hi nd hi m [Go bert] a nd I go t the draft to try and s how him , to p ut some pressure on h im ," DuH am e l s aid. " I d idn' t want to try a nd pa s s hi m on the out s ide, so I se t him up o n the insi de to ta k e th e lead. I fe lt I co ul d go fa st enoug h so t hat h e co uldn't co me b a c k b y me , a nd I cou ld g et so m e gap on these guys . I got the d raft and he was kind of protecting the inside. It's kind of a double kin k there - it kinks then it kinks again - and I went for it, and I wa s in th e d irt again at Mid -Ohio. I tried to keep it on, bu t I think I proved today that there is no traction in the dirt." Ha y d e n crossed the lin e b ehind DuHamel in his best effort of the season. " I got a terrible start , " Hayden said. "I think I wa s in fourth or fifth , fifth maybe . I fina lly go t into th e lea d at some point , but I knew comi ng into this race that I c ould run the pace . But in 600 races , a lot of times that doesn 't g ive you th e win because a lot of th ings happen in 16 laps. I just tried to stay at the front, or a s close as I cou ld, for the whole ra ce . It was a pretty clean rac e , bu t there was a lot of pa ssing a nd e ve rybody was p retty agg ress ive . I passed e ve rybo dy pretty good exce pt for Antho ny [Gobe rt] - I co u ld n ev er m a k e a pass s tick o n him , a nd it s eemed like I followed him th e who le ra ce . He ha d parts of th e tra ck wher e he wa s strong and I ha d mine , but I couldn 't pa s s him in m y strong po ints . I go t by him a cou ple of times, and he would come rig ht b a c k pas t me . O v e ra ll , I'm really ha ppy with the bike . We found some stuff a t La gu na , and it's working s o much better. It felt good to race a t Laguna , and I fe e l like I really should have been o n the podium the re ." Th e n ca me Bos tro m , fortunate to h a ve tak en ad va n t a g e of Gobert's miscue , but u nhappy that things d idn 't go be tte r. "It wa s a bout wha t it lo o ked like - p re t ty h a ir y , " B o s t rom sai d . "T he re we re som e b ig m om ent s o ut th ere for a lot of peo p le . We h ad a pr etty good setu p, a nd I fel t co nfid ent t h a t we co u ld d o so me goo d times, bu t we had some rea lly ba d skip chatter on the re a r end - there was n o e nt ry gr ip on the rear and no ex it grip, especially . It was a rea l to ugh race for us because I think th a t h ad w e b e en bet ter off , we would h a ve been ce n te red in real good and got a good d rive and had a pretty g ood go at it. T he s e g uys di d a g o od job . If you give th is much in a 600 race, you 'r e going to b e pass ed by eight guys . That 's what h appened today . I guess we had a chink in ou r armor , and we wen t backwa rds. It was a disappoi nting race fo r us . "We d efin ite ly got a g im me to get up here on the pod ium. I didn't th ink we had mu ch of a shot at it because ev e ry tim e I woul d try to gas it up I'd c ome out of the s ea t. Anthony got held up by a lapper coming out of one . It pushed h im wide on to t h e curve and he kind of recovered, b ut th en he overcooke d it going into the Keyho le . That allo wed me to go unde rneath h im and I g uess Ku rt is [Roberts] as well. He came by m e o n the bra kes , but he go t in there too big so I was able to square up and go back under him ." eN Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Lexingto n, Ohio Results: July ZZ, ZOO1 60 0 « SUPERSPO RT FINAL: I.
