He's be ing chased by a pack that Includes John Hopkins, Miguel DuHamel , Tommy Hayden, Eric Bostrom and Kurtis Roberts. lEXINGTON, OH, JULY 22 M ig uel DuHamel , the undisputed King of 600cc Supersp ort raci n g , did it again a t the M id -Ohio Sports Car Cou rs e, wi nning for the 39th ti me in his career and aga in get ti n g t he bette r o f a d og figh t at the front of th e pack . Aga in showing his uncanny ability to rise to the occasion , DuHamel was in a six-way fight for victory the entire distance, leading on occasion , fading back on occasion , but leading when it counted the very most. When all was sa id and done, there was the gritty DuHamel and his Honda CBR600F4 i at th e fron t - just like he 'd done 38 times before. Secon d pl ac e in what w a s yo u r basi c wi ld and c ra zy 600c c Super sport fi nal ultimat ely fell to Yamaha's Tommy Hayden, the fastest qu ali fi er . Hayd en only led th e rac e for a lap, but he was always in the lea d battle and he was there at the end while others aro und him faltered. Championship lea der Eric Bostrom d id little t o hu rt h is champ ionsh ip asp iration s, as he fin ished a fortu nate th ird . St uck at the back of the lea d group for most of the race with a tire he wa sn 't overly impressed w ith , Bostrom persevered and suddenly wha t app eared to be a bad day t u rn e d i n t o quite a good day , all things co nsid ered. Bostr om 's gain was Anthon y Gob ert 's loss . The Australian looked to be in with a solid chan ce of winning the ra c e, leadi ng se ven of th e 16 laps across t he st ri pe . On the last lap , thoug h , it all went wrong fo r the factory Yamaha rider as he wa s balked by a lapped rider - th en a ch ain of events led t o h is demise and he ended u p fifth, losing po ints to Bostro m ju st when i t looked as though he was going to pi ck up a bunch. 12 AUGUST 1 ,20 01 • cu e I In th e process of Gobert's going from second to fi fth on the final lap , Hayden an d Bostrom benefit ed , but so t o d id Er ion Ra ci n g ' s K u rt i s Rob erts, who al so end ed up m o ving around Gobert on th e fi na l lap to fin ish fourth. Hayden is fourth with 162 po in ts, well clea r of fifth -placed Hayes . The race began with Yosh imura Suzuki's Jamie Hacking storm ing off th e line to lead th e fr ay into turn one . Hac k ing 's run at t he fr ont wo u ld be over befo r e it r ea ll y b e ga n as he cras hed on the sec o n d l a p while atte mpti ng to cl ear away from the pursuing pac k . That left DuHamel at th e fro nt , but only fo r two lap s. Th en Gob ert took a turn at the lead , with his time th er e lasting for six lap s. The ac t ion at the front was fast and furio us. By the fifth lap, Rob ert s had worked his wa y to the back of e n e .... So the lead pack, th e six th ri de r in a six rid er train. A nd he on ly trai led Gobert by .8 of a second. On the sixth lap, Hayden moved int o third place with Hopk ins a l so mov ing around Bostrom, who wa s str ug gling with bad rear tire on his Kawasaki. Th e cham pion ship leader was in tr oubl e, but he n ever gave u p and h is pe rsi ste nce wo ul d pay dividends by race end . DuHamel had a big moment on th e seventh l ap, when h e tri ed to pass Gobert on the inside through th e kink on the ba ck straight. There was no room there, however. and the French C an a d i a n took to the dirt, further proving that "there is no traction in the dirt." He w a s luck y not to l o se more th an j ust a few places on th e rac etra c k . From there he settl ed in to watch th e show up fro n t for a few laps. And wh at a show he saw.
