CA, MAY 26 Some 40 riders, all ag ed 4 0 and ov er and proud members of ROTMX, came to Competition Park ready to prove to all that the young d udes don 't own any special cla im at being fast and good. Once again, they proved that they still had the steel, the feel, and the muscle - or close to it - to wi n and im press. Gary Scheidler got hi s Yamaha Into the lead and cl ear ly dominated all the Ma ster s action for seven laps and ci nched first pla ce. Bill Hagen rode in an im p ressive second . Steve Donaldson opened the second moto with the lead and controlled the pace for three laps until Hagen jetted past and became "The 88 JULY 11 ,2001 • cue I e Man" for thr ee laps. However, Scheidler had his way on lap seven, leaving Hager with second place. There was a whole lot of lead-switching and playing catch-up among the Expens. Dan Willenborg started it all with his lead and plenty of speed . Har d -cherq inq Paul Heckman t oo k over the lead by l a p two . Phil Cruz allowed Heckman to lead while he worked his way th ro ugh the pack after a first -tum mishap, and then he made a last- lap pass that led to a har d-won victory and left Heckma n in second. Mota two was less co mplicated. Cruz took the early lead and beat all of the others to the fi nish for his big win . However, Lyle Sweete r didn 't make it easy, as he pursued Cruz until the end and in the process pick ed up second place. Amateur Ov er 4 0 ride r T erry T at e had another rem arkable racing da y. With unbeat able speed and skill, he won both motos. John Timmermans was in good form, too, and he outma nueve red several riders to place second . Gar y Eak er pow ered hi s KTM into th ir d. In mota two, Joe Red - alway s a read y and fast contender - sped in with second , and Lar ry Fisher certainly compensated for his bad start with a third -plac e finish . Bill Malone blasted out as the leader in the A mateur Over 50 co ntest, but th is situation didn't last lo ng, because Ja ck Garland soon sped past. Garla nd raced on at an unstoppab l e pace t hat didn 't cha ng e until he wrapped up the win, followed by Malone with a sure second and Jack Goodhue collecting third . Ray Simmons kept his CZ zooming all the way to the finish for the win in moto two . Malone scored in with another second, and Larry Hall crossed over with third . In the fi rs t Novice Over 40 ra c e . J oe Osteen shot out with his 500cc Kawasaki into the lead for openers. with Mark Togu chi following him. Eric Allo y saw his opportun ity to pass Tog uch i and we nt for It on lap t wo . Osteen proved to be a tough er challe nge . Osteen held his ground and raced across the finish with first . followed by All oy . Moto two began with Alloy getti ng his Kawasak i into the lead and ho lding on for fiv e lap s, but then Osteen once again too k ov er. Osteen sped on to another mo to wi n, with Alloy taki ng a well ~ deserved second. Re sult s J~ n MSTR: I. Gary Sche idl" (Yam): 2. Bill Hag~ (Ya m) . EX: I . Phil Cruz (Yam): 2. Tim Williams (Kaw). JUNE 3 The only thing hott er than th e Nevada wind was the raci ng as th e Cali fornia Motorcycle Road Racing Association m et for the first ti me on the tarmac of the Las Vegas Kartin g Center for the sixth round of its 200 I series. There was no doubt th at Jon Schendel and his 14-year-old son J. D. Sch endel came to Sloan to rac e, lendi ng cre de nce to th e old adage. "like father, like son." Both rode great races, and at the end of the day they had the tr oph ies to pr ove it. Trying to fi nd a chink in Leonard Mell gr en's armor, the elder Sch endel pressured Meilgren from beginning to end of the morning Expert Stock race. Watchi ng th e lead battl e from a safe d istan c e, Jason Takamoto had th ird nailed down, while Blair Sulleng er, Phil Herrin and James Mann contested fourth . Sullenger crashed out on lap three. leaving Herrin and Mann to co ntend for fourth, with th e honors going to Herrin on the last lap. At the line, Mellgren he l d off Sch end el fo r fi rs t , with Taka moto third and Herrin fourth . In the aftern oo n race , Mell g ren , Herrin , Takamoto and Sch endel were runn in g one two-three-four until lap five, when Schendel sudden ly came aliv e. As the whit e flag fell. Schendel found him self in the lead. Not to be denied. Mellg ren got the best of Schendel In the tight infield section. holding him at bay to the finish . Mellgren took the ove rall honors . wit h Schendel secon d, Herrin th ird and Takamoto fourth . The Veteran Stock race foun d Mellg ren and Schendel once again faci ng off . With a m ultitude of races withi n races , the Vet race was exciting to wa tch, as Schende l fought Mellgren to the line for the win in the first race, onl y to have Mellg ren fight back for the win in the aftemoon race. Mellg ren took the overall. Schendel was a very respecta ble second. Herrin placed a hard -earned third, and Takamoto was a solid fourth . Evidently in sp i r ed by his fathe r . the younger Sche ndel rode to four im p ressive wins in the Beginner Stock and Mod ifi ed classes. Making Sch end el earn hi s win s, ano the r im p ressive yo ung rider, 15-year-old Brad Nor li ng . proved to be th e hol eshot kin g of th e cl ass, taking the early lead in all four races. When it all shook out, the overall finishes in Beg inner Stock gav e the wi n to Sch end el, with Yasuyo Nakamu ra sec ond, Tony Perez thi rd and Norling holding on to fourth after crashing in th e afternoon race . Sch end el again cap tured the overall win in the Beginner Modified cl ass, whil e A lv in A lejandro rod e to a welld eserv ed secon d , Norli ng wa s t hird , a nd Shawn McEliiott was a solid fourth . Props go out to Jerry Johnson. who came in from Northem Califomla to show the So-Cal riders how it's do ne by pu tt in g tog ether two incredibly quick win s in th e extreme ly fast and competitive Expert 80cc GP class . Johnson walked away wi th the overall . followe d by Rolando Qui ntero, Aaron Hammel and Skye Girard . eN Results VET STK: I . l.eonard MeCIgrft'l; 2. Jon ScMndd: 3. Phil H~: 4. J non Takamoto; 5.
