This was the first race ever held at Cedar Creek . and all the te rrain was freshly cut . The co urse was tec hn ica l, with gna rly. off -camber slnqle - tra ck sections that led th rough a rock garden. In thi s secti on. about 75 per cent of th e rid ers went down. There was also a fast . wide ope n secti on across a grass track that quickly turned into a m ot ocros s track. Cedar Cree k had a li tt le bit of everything to offer, and its first eve nt was e great on e. Last year 's Ark e nsa s Ha r e Scrambl es Series ove rall ch am pion. Johnny Rhodes. put on a good sho w and had no problems makin g a score at this ev ent. As soon as th e event sta rt ed, Rhod es and Martin Up ton wen t into the fi rst co mer nec k and neck. with Rhodes in th e lead by j ust one wheel. The n Upton and Dr ew Ch andl er pa ssed Rhod es on th e high speed gra ss track . It wasn 't until the th ird lap that Rhode s got on the gas and made the pass bac k into the lead. Upton was cha rg in g fo r th e fi rst· plac e position wh en he hit a roc k and bent his rear break rotor, ruining it beyond repa ir. Upton continued to race, j ust to stay in the game . Whil e Rhodes was still in th e lead . Chandl er made a pit stop . and Upton took the chance to slide into second place. Chandler did n't waste m uch ti m e in the p its, though, as his pit crew had him quickl y out and on the gas , and he moved back into th ird . Clint Carr was riding hard. closing th e gap for fourth . Rhodes wa s starting to pull a stro nger lead as the laps wo re on . Riding strong. Chan dler passed Up ton to regain second pla ce. Th e single-45·minute -moto format proved to be challenging even for the expe ri enced ri ders . Billy .Jurev ic h, aboard his Al l Ameri can Suzuk i, too k top ho nors in the Pro cl ass, eve n t hough he w as raci ng with an injured finger. Mi ke Dic ker so n pu lled a clea n ho leshot and put hi s Kawasaki into the early lead in th e co m bi ned Int er m ed iate/ Pro moto . With 45 m inutes to go . Jurevlch had pl enty of ti m e to work his wa y up fro nt. On ce J ur ev ich a nd Hond a -mounted Kenny Hes se worked th ei r wa y pa st Dickerso n. the y were all alo ne u p fro nt. For nearl y 30 laps. Hesse was trying to make up time . but Jurevich stayed j ust out of st ri ki ng d istance. When th e checkered n ag flew. it was Jurevich up fron t , with Hesse right behind. Dickerson hung on to win the Interm ediate cla ss with room to sp are - h is secon d win of the day . The Ove r The Hill Gang was in att endan ce, with top honors going to Keith Divireill o for winnin g th e Pro class over Greg Albin , wh o finished a close second . Saturday 's Pee Wee ra ces featured so m e firsts for severa l of riders. In the 60 cc Interme diate class , g ·year ·o ld Nikky Nunn and his fath er shared the excitement of his best fi nish ever. "I was in second when I wr ec k ed o n the last lap ," Nunn beamed. "I went over th e bars, so I didn't get it - bu t I got third!" Te n-year-old Bra dley Bevars was th e rider who moved ahead of Nunn after having been moved up a class two races ag o. "In this cla ss, this is my best fi nish so far ," he said prou dly .
