In the first Scratch semi , the pole went to Jim Estes. with " Rock in ' Richard" Jone s in two and Ed Castro and Ryan Fish er in three and four. Fisher too k the lead before the fir st tu rn . Ca st ro went t o work o n the outsi de . Estes and J one s battl ed fo r third . Cast ro couldn't find th e chi nk in Fi sher' s armor and he had to sett le fo r second. whi ch was good enough for a ti cket to th e m a in . along w ith Fisher. Est es and J ones m oved to th e Cc nsi. In the second Sc rat ch sem i, the pole went to Bobby Schwa rtz. w ith Shawn McConnell in tw o . Gary Hick s and Janniro were in three and four, Sch wartz outgated the fie ld and was off on top . with Janni ro in two and McCon nell in three. Janniro finall y passed Schwa rtz on the wh it e-fl ag la p. Sch wartz 's second earne d him a tr i p to the main with Ja n niro, w h ile McC on nell and Hicks moved to the Co nsi. Jones held off Estes for o ne lap before Estes too k ove r, and they fini shed in th at orde r. In th e fi rst Handicap sem i, Hicks passed Shawn Harm ati uk with two lap s to go . Th e win went to Hicks, but seco nd was good eno ug h for Harm atiuk to ma ke th e main. Jones and Paul Col ston took the fi nal two spo ts, J anniro went wi re to wi re in the second Hand icap semi, with Schwartz. McConnell an d Bill y Lyon s also tr an sferri ng to t he main. The li neup for the Handicap main had Har m atiuk all alone on th e 10 . Co lston and J ones were on the 20. Fi sher had the 4 0 to hi mself, and the 50 wa s crowd ed with Hicks, J anniro, Schw artz and Mc Con nell . In the fi rst try • Fi sher and Ja nni ro went at it pretty hard . O n the th ird la p . F isher ca m e o ut hig h and tan gled w ith J anniro , ca using a chain react ion . Fisher , J anniro , Hi ck s and McConne ll all went down hard . The first -ever AHRMA flat -track race at th is wel l-pre pa red quarter-mile oval dre w a large field of Support and Pro riders to add to th e Vinta ge cl asses. The local rider who has probably put in the most la ps at Co m petition Park went flag to flag in the '7 0s Sing les race . Joe Steffe n was pushed hard by Brad Spencer, but Spe nce r' s sma lle r Hon da was pulled down the straights by Steff en 's Yama ha . Third- place starter John Lu ndg ren's Honda gave up on the seco nd la p, which allo wed Keith Bradford into thi rd, Th e Vet race wa s all Spe ncer's , as Steffen lost the d rag race to the first co m er.
