Cedar Raceway: Tony Caputo was the aGcc (7-11) Stock winner in Cedar City , Utah, Cedar Raceway H ernan d e z Hogs the H ardware By DIC G OODWIN K CEDAR CITY, UT, MAY 27 Commercial Roofe rs -sponsored Kawasaki jockey Rodney Hernandez showed the 80cc (12 .15) J unior ra cers the fast way aro und the tra ck at the support race at Cedar Raceway, held in conjunction with the AMA Western Four-Stroke National Motocross event. So uth Valley Dirt wcrk s hotshoe Eric Barlow ripped the holeshot to start the race action off, jus t ahead of Transport Tire/Mehrs Doors backed J osh Morast and th en Hernandez, who battled pas t Morast and then set out after Barlow. Barlow and Hernandez went at it for a lap or so until Hernan dez sliced unde rneath Bar- low in a back -section comer to grab the lead for good . Hemandez ope ned it up and took the mote -one win , with Barlow a so lid sec o nd, ah ea d of Morast. Barlow nailed an oth er holeshot to start the second half, but Hemandez zapped him in the first few turns to take ove r first. Herna ndez th en incr eased th e pace and opened up a big lead . Late in the race, Mo ras t began closing up on Barlow, but Bar low was able to m ain tain the second sp ot. Herna ndez cruised to win n um be r two and the overa ll 8 0cc (12- 15) J unior crown, while Barlow too k second overa ll, ahead of Mor ast , Nathan Ambrose a nd Bryon Bundy. A couple of step s down but not mu ch off in speed, little Blak e Savage was ravaging the Pee We e (7 -8 ) Stock cla ss . Tash Han s en stuck his Cobra out in front to lead 'e m off, with T.J. Arner , Savage and Levii Hall right behind him. Savage made his move in the west section, fighti ng his way into the lead befor e lap o ne was over. Once in the clear, Savage turned the contest into a run awa y, dominatin g the first half. The battl e for second place was a real dogfight, however, as Hansen a nd Hall went at each othe r for the entire race. Finally, Hall blitzed the whoops to nip Hansen fo r sec ond in a great last lap . Bridgestone/Answ er Racing's Hall smoked th e field to start th e second stanza , pulling ahead of Amer and Hansen. Recovering from a slow start. Savage was carving through the field, taking over seco nd befor e the halfway ma rk of lap one and then passing Hall in the 80 JULY 1 1 , 2001 • cue • e rhythm se ct ion for the lead . Han sen was also making a m ove, passing Hall in th e drop down section for second. Sav ag e was way out in front and no one was going to catc h him, and he cru is ed to win number two and th e overall Pee Wee (7 ·8 ) cro wn. Hansen went down hard off of the triples on the west s ide , which drop pe d him to third overall, as Ha ll took se con d and second overall . Results proved ch allenging an d the soft , loamy soil gave all of the racers a good workout. On Mond ay, as the 125 /250cc com bined race lined up to do battle, 250cc desert ace Dav id Pearson to o k his pla c e on the ga te , determined to demons trat e his prowess on a motocross course as well as in the desert. And that he did, imme d iately, blasting off the line to lead 125cc Novice Mall Scott a nd 125cc Be g inn e r Ronnie Krause over the first hill. Tra vis Jackso n, a 125cc Novice, was on fire early on , forcing his way into second on the first la p. No one was going to catc h Pearson, however, as the front-runner stre tch ed his lead with eve ry lap. The ba ttle for second place was a different matter, howeve r, as Jackson and S Scott were going at it big time for first plac e in the 125cc Novice class. Pearson won the race easily, an d Jackson just held off Scott for second. Th e 125cc Beginn er winn er, Ch arl e y Wright, flashed through the pipes in fourth. As the second set blasted off the lin e , Novice king J ack s on sm oked the start. Mall S cott, KTM's Ronni e Krause, a nd Charle y Wright were right beh ind him. Of course , Pear son fought past rider after rider until he was in second. J ackson gave him a foght, but Pearson pulled off the pass for first in the sweepe r on lap two. That wa s it, as Pea rson rolled to his second stra ig ht victor y an d the o ve ra ll 250cc Ope n-class crown. J ac kso n again held off a charging Scott to top the 125cc Novice rank s, while Wright stayed perfect among the 125 cc Beginners. KTM kicke r Justin Wallis was the story on Monday in the 60 cc (9-1 1) class, as he too k bot h co nte sts with relative ease. Desert Toys spo nsored Robert Campbell grabbed the firstrace holeshot, just ahead of Shawn Harr iso n, Wallis and Tyler Willard. Wallis moved on Har rison afte r the hill and ca ught up with Campbell in the back section. After pa ssing Campbell, Wallis had cle ar sa iling o n the way to his first win. Campbell mainta ined a very s olid second place. In a clos e race, Willard's backsection cras h decided third plac e in favor of Harrison . Harrison kicked off th e second half with th e lead over the hill. Second - placed Wallis whistled by in mida ir to take the lead. Carnpbell also m ade a strong move to take ove r second, but Wallis was out in front once more and head ing for the bam. his double-mota victo ries e ns uring him the ove rall 60c c crown.
