The two -day event fea tured a mult itud e o f cla ss e s t h at pretty much covered all of th e bases . Basi call y, if yo u had a moto cr oss bike o r an y kind of dirt bike for that m atter - that was at least 10 yea rs old , there was a cla ss for you to race in. E v e n thou gh th e Vin t a g e Iro n World Ch ampionsh ips ' mai n theme is o ld m o to c ross b ik es , o n e of the ev ents ' h igh lights was m od e rn bikes piloted by "old" riders. The event was the Yamaha Rac e O f Champi ons , where invited motocross st a rs of the past competed on 2001 Yamaha YZ motocross bikes. Twel ve riders in a ll, most of them former m otocross champions, battled it out in the fourm oto c ompetition that was carried out over the two days. Former Team Yamaha ride r J im Holley en ded up taking the win over AMA's first -ever 125 cc Nat ional MX Champion , Mart y Smith (19 74- '75). But the ma in reason over 400 riders came out to Glen Helen fo r the Vintage Iron World Championshi ps was to do their own racing, to dust off the ir old mach ines and give them a whirl on the tra ck onc e again . Some of the bikes, however, d id not need much d usting , as they we re obviously well ta ken care of. In fac t, some of the up to 30-year-old bikes looked in better shape t ha n their owners! But th e y'd proba bly have it no oth er way . Saturda y's raci ng fea tured th e vinta ge bikes (1 974 and o lder) and an Evolution (197 5 a nd newer) Su pport H race, while Sunday's racing featured t he Evol ut ion bik es a nd a Vintage Support ra c e . Both days fea tured ni ne motos , pl us two YROC motos , while Sunday also inclu ded a twom oto MX des Nat ions - st yle t e a m ra ce , whe re three riders tea m up and compete on th e tr a ck at the s am e ti m e . The trio with the lowes t com bine d mo to finis hes were the winners , bu t "pe nalty'.' points we re assessed to riders on "newer" bikes. This yea r's win ning team wa s a ga in Team Arizona , led by Evolution 3 Ex pe rt class winner Robert Na ughton .
