BRIEFLY••• Promoter Casey Folks billed Tonopah as an all-new course, and by many reports it did indeed contain lots of new terrain. "The course was great: 250cc Pro winner Danny Cooper said. "It was all basically new. It was just awesome out there: it was a lot of fun.- Four-stroke Pro winner Taber Murphy agreed, adding. · 1shouldn't be saying this, but it had beautiful scenery!" Wild ho rs es added to the scenery, though they also caused Shane Esposito a bit of concem when a small herd ran toward him. •All of a sudden. I saw, like, 20 horses run out, and there were about seven or eight behind them in another pack: he recalled. · 1was hoping they'd dart the other way, but they didn't. I had to stop for them. Usually, they're nowhere around. Usually you see them way off the trail." Esposito also reported seeing about 50 head of cattle in a canyon coming into pit five. •But they were laying down and pretty far off the road,- he said. " You really didn't have to worry about them. But when the cars come through. It could be a different story! " Chris Baum rode from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Tonopah with a small tent and a spare set of wheels (with real knobbies mounted) lashed to both sides of his BMW GS, intending to simply finish and do it as cheaply as possible. After having a go at the SCORE Baja 500 earlier in the month, a group of racers from Hawaii decided that they'd retum to the mainland and try their hand at the Nevada desert, since their bikes were still there. All three teams finished, with one-time ISDE racer Mall Lyman and his partner, Daryl Hambleton (who lives in C elfforma), doing the best and winning the Over-35 Expert class on their Pflueger Honda XR650R.
