Upcoming Rounds: Round 9 - Lima, Ohio, June 30 Round 10- Du Quoin, Illinois, July 7 on the first lap. It was there that 26year-old Duncanville, Texas, rider Greg Teague bolted precariously into the lead on his Ricky Farmer-tuned Buell and simply pulled away from a tough field to post his first career SuperTracker victory, leaving Corbin Racing's Joe Kopp and F&S Suzuki rider Willie McCoy to battle for second place in a race that turned out to be a single-file parade for the duration. "In that first corner, I thought that I had gave it all away right there," the Marioneaux Racing-backed Teague "I hit that big hole in turn one, 1 was all over it. From there, I just said. and kept telling myself to stay calm and not ride over my head. Every time I came off of two, I would look back BRIEFLY••• J.R. Schnabel got a hell of a scare during practice when something let go in the bowels of his primary Team Powell XR750 ride. locking up the rear wheel and throwing him into the hay bales in tum one. The alwaystough youngster hopped right up after the crash. only to survey the wreckage sticking out the front of his cases. prompting team owner Bill Powell to rib Schnabel that this particular blowup was going to cost "a few extra cans of Coors Light." Schnabel rode his back-up bike to 13th in the main event. Brent Annbruster (below) showed up to the Superior Half Mile and got what he came for. a main-event berth that will ensure that he keeps his AMA Grand National number 73 for another season. No longer a fulltime series traveler, Armbruster is usually a sure bet to make one or two main events a year. but he was especially impressive at Superior. holding off Nicky Hayden for the win in the second semi. "I was just trying to be smooth and not get on the throttle too hard." Armbruster said. "This is my kind of track. I can usually make these things if I don't crash or get stuck with a bunch of crappy starts." Armbruster finished 18th in the main event. and see Joe. I just kept trying to tell myself to calm down and everything "I can tell you what, you're likely to see me hanging in the shop with a tiedown around my neck if this keeps up." Will Davis' mechanic Mike Wheeler deadpanned after the main event. "This is the most unbelievable thing I've ever had to go through. That shock was just X-rayed two weeks ago. so I don't know what to tell you. Everywhere we go. we are the fastest guys out of the truck. and then something happens. There's no explanation for it. It's just the craziest things that happen. I can't work any harder. but I'm not giving up yet." Paul Lynch put his JAB Computing Harley-Davidson in the main event for the first time in a few races. Although he ultimately finished 16th. the Maryland rider was looking for something good to happen soon. "We needed that one. - Lynch said. "We've had some bad luck the last couple races. so this was a reai confidence boost. It seemed like once the traffic spread out, it was hard to make up time. It was really easy to iose time. because everyone was going the same speed. but it was good to be in there at least. " While he expects to see more riders in contention for the championship before season's end, Chris Carr once again said that he wouldn't mind if it did come down to him and Joe Kopp for the title. "I like racing with Joe." Carr said. "He doesn't give up. and you know that when you beat him you had to ride your ass off to do it. So it's rewarding. The fact that he's got the number-one plate on his bike has a lot to do with it. too. To me. this [battle] is fun. it's exciting and it's good for the sport. I'd rather have it tight than be a runaway." would work out. It did. This track was Despite finishing second to Chris Carr in the main event. Joe Kopp still had a special day at the Superior Half Mile. as it was one of the few races that his five-year-old son Garrett has gotten to attend since Kopp became a full-time touring pro. Garrett lives with his mother and stepfather in Honolulu, Hawaii, making travel logistics a chore. "He had to fly seven hours by himself from Honolulu to Los Angeles." Kopp said. "I flew from Indy to LA to meet him. and then we both flew back to Indy." According to Kopp. Garrett got to sit next to last year's Miss America on the flight from Hawaii. just like Devils Bowl [Texas]. That came to my advantage today." Teague crossed the line with nearly a half-second margin of victory over Kopp, the win also giving him the series points lead. He now leads J.R. Schnabel in the title race, 46-43. Meanwhile, last week's winner Bryan Bigelow worked his way from sixth to fourth, while Schnabel suffered a dismal start and went from 13th to 11 tho Samuel Lowe, Steve Liberty, Mike Hacker, Brian Kromroy and Kenny Coolbeth rounded out the top 10, but those results are unofficial, pending a lab test on McCoy's fuel, which was found to be outside of AMA guidelines upon post-race inspection. The hits kept on coming for Memphis Shades/Coziahr Harley-Davidson' s Kevin Vames. After failing to qualify at Hagerstown. Varnes was chasing Chris Carr in the opening heat race. only to get sideways off turn two and swat the ground in a vicious high-side. Varnes was ambulanced off the track and returned to his pits with a possible broken left foot. "I don't know. I wish I had been in the lead when it happened because that would have made it more dramatic. - Varnes joked. "I think it might be broken. but if it ain't, we'll be ready for Lima. If it is. well. then we're done for a Iittie while." Will the real Superman please stand up? The famous S logo of the comic-book superhero made two appearances at the Superior Half Mile. Not only was it prominently displayed on the back of the Arai helmet of Jay Springsteen (arguably an appropriate location). but it was also found as the lead cap on the back of the leathers of Wisconsin rider Jim Sumner. Rich King is one battered and bruised individual these days. In addition to his sore ankle. King showed up to Superior sporting a nasty hematoma over much of the right side if his chest. courtesy of a dirt clod at the Hagerstown Half Mile. "It was the only one I caught all day, but it feit like someone hit me in the chest with a baseball bat'- King said. "it really swelled up. and it has made a lot of women I know jealous. Only trouble is. I'm lopsided." CN cue I e n e _ s JULY 4, 2001 17
