Weaver Like the Wind

Wind gusts close to 50 mph greeted the riders
at the High Country Motocross Association's
rounds five and six in Great Falls. The Electric
City Dirt Riders hosted 407 riders on Satur·
day, who were greeted by howling winds,
which made the crosswind jumps only for the
brave of heart. The few riders who attacked
the 60-foot tabletop jumped the right side and
were up to 10 feet to the left upon landing.
Crashes due to unpredictable wind gusts kept
the racing closer to the ground for most riders.
Sunday's 353 riders were greeted by winds at
a more manageable 20 to 30 mph. The race
track became a blue-grooved knobby-killer
late in the afternoon.
In Sunday's 250cc Pro class, North Star
Yamaha's Cameron Weaver powered his blue
426 out to a seven-second lead in three laps.
Coming up through the pack was Saturday's
first-place finisher, Brad Conway, who gained
slightly on Weaver. The win went to Weaver
by five seconds, setting the stage for the finalmoto battle of the day between Conway and
Weaver.
"I have been getting good starts, and that's
the key here this weekend," said Weaver. "The
track Is real slippery, so I go in hard and slide
to the edge of the track. where the loose stuff
is, and power out."
His plan had worked all weekend, as
Weaver had won all four of the 125cc Pro
motos and two of the three 250cc Pro motos.
In Sunday's second 250cc Pro moto,
Weaver was out in front agajn at the start, with
Jon Dullum and Conway in tow. DuJlum's
Trane Air/No Fear/Advantage Metal Productsbacked Honda was taking large doses of roost
from Weaver's rear wheel. Dullum shorted the
step-down table jump, allowing Conway to
pull even. The Central Montana Yamaha
rider's 426 powered by Dullum in the follow·
ing high-speed tum. Conway now had a threesecond gap to Weaver and clear field of
vision. Weaver held tight in the groove whiJe
Conway was hammering through the choppy
inside Jines to gain ground. The gap to the
front had shrunk to less than two seconds
when Conway slid out and gave Weaver a
large lead for the win. Conway remounted and
held on to second despite a badly twisted foot,
followed by Dullum, who was missing most of
his rear tire.
"I got a good start but lost most of my rear
tire," lamented Dullum, who added with a grin,
"but I came in third, so maybe It helped."
By late Sunday afternoon, the track had
become a hard-packed, bump-filled monster.
Large portions of jump landings had cratered
out, and black tire marks were in every corner. This made the final Vet Pro moto fun Lo
watch, as the lead pack of five riders changed
positions for five laps. After finding his way to
the front, Jon Ellingson had clear track ahead.
The battle for second between Rick Bunch and
Saturday's class winner, Dullum, lasted another lap until Bunch got by for second.
