MellaISS Park Laughridge Levels the Field By CLAY LiGHT WASHOOGAL,WA,MAY27 S uzuki-mounted Californian Evan Laughridge had a successful weekend, winning the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at the second of two consecutive days of racing at Washougal Motocross Park. Nearly 500 riders from seven states and Canada were on hand for the third round of the AMA District 27 Washougal Motocross Series. Laughridge, who had an equally successful outing the day prior at the Loretta Lynf)'s qualifier, headed up the field of 125cc A/B riders in both motos to snare the rider from Forest Ranch, California, his first overall win. Laughridge led Tracy Johnson and Oregon's Keith Kadell in the first moto and then came back to again trounce the competition in moto two. Johnson went 2-2, ahead of fellow Washingtonian Travis Murphy (4-3), the third overall finisher. In the combined 19-rider B class, Yamaha rider Dale Ainslie, who was a three-class winner at the Loretta Lynn's qualifier, was looking to make a similar mark, but things turned bleak for the Washingtonian after he gated with the A riders in the first wave and was then docked one lap. This allowed Oregon's Tyler Fick (4-1) to nab the overall win by virtue of his secondmoto victory. Even a talent-laden field of riders in the 250cc A/Pro class couldn't put the clamps on Laughridge. Former National number-93 plate-holder Terry Lee Hamness did all he could to put an end to the Golden State rider's win streak, but the Yamaha rider was destined for the number-two spot overall after a pair of runner-up finishes. Suzuki rider Murphy netted his second consecutive third overall finish on the day with a 3-3 tally, trailed by J.R. Vielle (4-4) and Oregon's Jason Matthews (5-5). Ainslie rode impressively to top the first combined 250cc B moto, ahead of Ben Morgan and Keith Ford, but after steadily progressing through the field to take the B-c1ass lead, the Yamaha rider encountered problems and did not finish. Suzuki-mounted Tye Crandall took the point position in Ainslie's absence, thus garnering the overall win with a 4-1 tally, ahead of the consistent Ford (3-2). However, that's where the consistency ended, as Sean Stewart (7 -3) finished third, ahead of'Morgan (2-8) and Brett Okerman (6-5). Kawasaki rider Joshua Hill had things going his way in the Supermini class. The rider from LaCenter, Washington, walloped the competition in both Supermini (9-11) motos, finishneVlls ing ahead of Shawn HaberJock and Chris Johnson overall. Ryan Villopoto won the Supermini (12-15) class overall, but he had to forge forward in moto two before netting the win, as he trailed Hill at moto's end in the combined class. Sheren finished second to Villopoto in the Supermini (12-15) class, and Ross Johnson was third. Haberlock came back later to decimate the 80cc (7-11) class with a tally similar to that of Hill's. Alaska's Ben LaMay posted impressive performances in both motos to nab second overall with a 3-2 score, followed by Californian Greg Fouts (2-4). Adam Metzler and Lars Trulson went head to head in the 125cc C class - with 38 riders, the day's largest. Trulson won out in the moto one shootout, but Metzler bounced back to win moto two, thus enabling the Gaston, Oregon, rider the overall win. Cody Buyas trailed Metzler to the finish in moto two, but coupled with a moto one fourth-place finish, Trulson nabbed second overall (2-3). Buyas (4-2), Devin Watson (3-5), and Eric Stevenson (5-4) rounded out the top five overall. Buyas returned after his successful 125cc showing to go one step further in the 250cc/Open C class, using a 2- 1 tally to garner the overall win in the 29-rider field. Local rider Paul Kitchen captured the moto-one win but couldn't match that performance in moto two, finishing fifth. Chip Chapman finished second overall to Buyas (4-2), while David Bertschi (33), Kitchen (1-5) and Craig Bowman (10- 7) trailed. The younger of the two racing Viilopoto brothers, Tyler, was the cream of the crop in the 16-rider 65cc (911) class, but he had to fend off Tevin Tapia and Tommy Weeck in both motos in order to attain success. Weeck gave chase in moto two and finished runner-up to Villopoto overall. In the 65cc (7-8) class, Landon Currier ran amid the Senior riders to nab the overall win via a 1-1 sweep for the local rider who recently switched from Kawasaki to KTM machinery. Oregon's Jared Wood trailed Currier in both outings. Cameron Russell, Zachary Cook and Ben Baldasano followed. CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross series Round 4: Arizona State Fairgrounds Ehrman Earns Medal at Copperstate By ROBERT VAN DAMME PHOENIX, AZ, MAY 26 B ryan Ehrman has been working hard throughout the 2001 season, and it paid off with a decisive come- from behind-win in moto one and a mistake-free ride in moto two as he took the overall in the 125cc Junior class at the fourth round of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Series, presented by Mel Clayton, FMF, Gordy's, Arrowhead Extreme Outfitters, Franklin £, Associates, and Bent. Ehrman has been chasing CMC series in both Arizona and California for most of the year, and he has made a major improvement in speed and consistency.
