Ya maha ha s a lso increased its pa rtic ipation , with plans to a wa rd a YZ25 0 to o ne lucky rider at th e fina l round. Scoring big poi nts for h is s p ons or , John Bu rr Cycle s , Te rry Fow le r took on th e 250 c c Pro s a nd t h e Jun ior Ve ts and Vet Experts , tota ling s ix m o to s for the da y . Fowler's record wa s nearly flawless , scoring firsts in a ll motos with the ex cep tio n of the 250 cc Pro race . Fo r his first race of the day , th e 250cc Pro c lass, Fowler captured the h o le s h o t , be at in g S ean "Ho les ho t" O ' C o n no r to th e fir st turn . Fowler he ld off O'Connor until the th ird la p , when O'Co nnor to o k control o f t he le ad . Du rin g lap fou r , F ow ler fell behind Kris Keefer but re ga ined s ec ond d ur ing the wh ite -flag lap. Moto two was owned by O'Connor, who he ld th e lead unchallenged from sta rt to finish . His rival , Fo wler, slid out in th e holeshot turn and started the m oto in last. Fow ler fin ished in third, behind Keefer. In the Vet Expert c lass, Fow ler found himself compe tin g aga inst his friend and som et ime teammate , Montclair Yamaha 's T y Dav is . The YZ426F -mounted Fowler adm itted that co m p e ting a g ai ns t Davi s (o n a YZ250F) was not a fa ir com pa riso n. "If h e b e ats m e on the 25 0 , I'll reall y b e ups et ," said Fow le r. "T he pow er differen c e b e twe en t h e two bik es is so mu ch." In both motos , Fowler led from st art to finish , with Dav is a few bike lengths be hind . Willy Musgrave, in third , was also a strong co n te n d e r, ready to pounce s ho uld the leaders fa lter. T his being Fowle r's sixth moto for th e da y , he admitted that he was "ve ry glad " to cross the finis h line . "I was barely holding on ," he sa id, laughing. In the 125cc Pro event, O 'Connor again found his chief competition was with a Vet racer; thi s time, it was Ty Da vis. O 'C onn or c a pture d the first moto holesho t. Coming out of Bud ' s Creek , YZ25 0F-mo unted Da vis had taken over the lead, with O'Conno r now the pursuer. Da vis d iced with O 'Connor through the ne xt two laps until problems with his stator took Dav is out of conte ntion. Magnum /FMF/ Maxxis/Pro Action/IMS -backed O 'Connor too k the checkers, followed by Kris Keefer and Moor e . In the se cond 12 5 c c Pro moto , O 'Connor a nd Davis aga in battled fo r the lead. This tim e , O 'Connor refu s ed to relinquish t h e lead , le av in g t he number-tw o position for Dav is . Follow ing O 'Connor and Da vis a cros s the finish line were Moore and Ke efer. Diminutive Andrew Johnson , in his second c a re er race in the 80cc Beginner cla ss , showed that size does not a racer m ake . Armstrong. ..Johnson and Armstrong battled for the lead for two more laps . As the wh ite flag flew , Armstrong bobbled a nd Johnson captured the lead. Johnson crossed the finis h line first, with Armstrong s e co nd .
