Th ey would all be at full speed when th ey hit th e first turn , and the one who got through in an upr ight position had a pretty good shot a t collecting all the marbles . T he area's best 80cc ride rs got sh ut out by the on ly out-of-state rider co mpeting , Wash ingto n's Cody Denha m. Hulsey , Yamaha-mou nted in both th e 125cc an d 25 0 cc Intermedi a te clas ses , pre vailed overall in bo th a nd added an im p ressive third in the Pro Am ove r Northern Divisi on Pro Billy Jure vich , visit ing from Hollis te r. It n e _ s was a co nsistent day for Hulsey, who wo n e ver y race he entered. Aga ins t th e Suzuki-mounted J urevich , Hulsey broke to the lead at the start and led by two seconds at th e halfwa y po int , then av eraged nearly a second -per-Iap inc rease to the end. Local racer Steve Ne lson of Madera got third, bu t on ly afte r nearly getting involved in a fight. That fight oc curred not in the Pro Am but e a rli e r, in the first 125c c Intermedi ate contest - on ly the sec o nd ra c e o f t he d a y . Wh ile Hu ls e y was winn ing a nd Honda pilot Robby Baptista of Kerm an was ba rely keep ing pace, Ne lson started stro ng , bu t a m is c ue on th e second la p p ut h im beh ind . He was slowly pick ing off ride rs until he was battl ing Yam aha ride r Brandon Jones for third. On th e final la p, aft e r a fe w white -kn uc k le turns , the two collided a nd spent m ore than a fe w se con d s o n t h e v er ge o f fisticuffs . With precious second s , a nd positions , fading qu ickly , Ne lson go t going again in last place. The refore , wh e n Hu lsey a gai n j u m pe d to the lead in the second 125cc e ncounter, Ne lso n' s seco nd-pla ce showi ng, no matte r h ow c lo s e to the le ad er he was , lost m uch of its sting overall. Eve n thoug h he took seco nd in th e moto, he only placed s ixth overall while the ra c e r wit h who m he ha d tangled , Jo nes , amazi ng ly g ot t he runner-up spot with a 5 -3 s howi ng ! Shawn Burk , a late entry who was not identified du ring the actua l ra ce , pla yed a majo r role as he m ove d into second plac e on la p two and continued there until th e fina l t rip a ro und t he c o u rs e. Hoa k trounced and took second , and Burk re bo unded q uickly to ho ld third.
