ILeft) Mike Corder was a two-class winner at the opening round of the CMC Northwest Summer Motocross Series at Albany Motorsports Park. Corder connected on wins in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, despite muddy conditions. Jeremy Steward, who led the way in the 50cc Open class, came back to trounce the competition in the Husqvarna 50cc Challenge, beating David Paschke to the finish. I t appears that the long drought in the Northwest is finally over. The track conditions at Albany Motorsports Park were muddy enough to bring out just the die-hards for the opening round of the 12-round CMC Northwest Summer Motocross Series on April Fools Day. Those die-hards included Team Green's Mike Corder and Yamaha rider Jesse Allen, each of whom snared two class wins. Corder was unstoppable. The 20year-old Kawasaki jockey won the 125 and 250cc Professional classes, one of the select few double-class winners amid the muddy track conditions. Another was Allen, who won the 250cc Intermediate and Open Amateur classes aboard his Yamaha YZ426F. The first classes to tackle the course were the combined Before The Hill, Open Amateur and Four-Stroke classes. Allen used his Yamaha to claim a win in the first of two motos, trailed by fellow YZF pilot Aaron Tunnell, who was the top rider in the Four-Stroke class. In the largest of the combined classes, the Before The Hill Junior class, Honda-mounted Ryan Huege posted a win ahead of Suzuki rider Adam Metzler and Ryan Brubeck. Moto two was much the same, as Allen capped off his first of two overall wins of the day in the Open Amateur class, with Tunnell taking the overall Four-Stroke win, ahead of Dan Kauffman. The youngest rider in I 26 APRIL 25,2001 • cue I e the field, 13-year-old Metzler, won the second Before The Hill contest, netting the overall win ahead of Huege (1-3), Ryan Thompson (4-2), Brubeck (3-6) and Jimi Blackwell, who was fifth with consistent 5-5 placings. Thompson came right back to trounce the competition in the 125cc Junior class, although his superb performances were overshadowed by both Corder and Tyler Fick, the lone Pro and Intermediate riders in the field of 19 riders. Thompson led the first lap of the first combined 125cc Pro/lntermediate/Junior-class moto, but Corder took command the on following lap and maintained it to the finish. Behind the Team Green/Pro Circuit/Shoei/Black Flys/Smithbacked Corder was a battle between Thompson and Fick, a swapfest that Fick controlled in the later stages, although the diminutive speedster was unable to reel in Corder at the completion, as Corder had checked out. Corder also hammered the competition in moto two, leading Fick to the finish. Thompson took control of the Junior class to cap off his 1-1 sweep, followed by the impressive Metzler, who finished off his day with first- and second-place-overall finishes, respectively, with his 2-3 postings in the Junior class, trailing Thompson and fellow Suzuki rider Cody Buyas in moto two. Suzukis filled the second through fifth positions overall, as Metzler (2-3), Buyas (5-2), Blackwell (34) and Brandon Sinden (4-5) trailed. Corder clobbered the competition in the combined 250cc Pro/lntermen D _ S diate/Junior class, but it was several laps before Corder took command of the first moto. Honda rider Tommy Blanton held up under pressure from Corder until the rider from southern Oregon finally buckled and Corder took the lead, which lead grew to nearly 10 seconds by the time he won, ahead of a close Allen/Jon Kauffman finish. Moto two was again Corder's. Having recently returned from the Lake Whitney, Texas, GNC, where his best finish was a sixth place in one of his 250cc Pro-class motos, Corder capped off his four-for-four tally, finishing ahead of Allen, who was the top-placing Intermediate rider after putting in his own four-for-four performance. Kauffman bettered Blanton in moto two to net second overall with a 3-2 tally, ahead of the up-andcoming Honda rider (2-3). Honda rider Jeff Payne stayed closest to the Intermediate riders to net a win in the Junior portion via 1-1 placings, followed by Yamahamounted Jeremiah Fisher (3-2), Mike Merina (4-3), Ryan Huege (2-6) and class newcomer Jeremy McLain, the fifth -place-overall finisher (6-4). Washingtonian Landon Currier, Danny Gubser and Gared Steinke filled the top positions in the Senior (9-11) class, with Jared Wood nabbing the overall win in the Junior (68) portion, ahead of Alec Watts. In the 60cc Open class, Steinke stole the show with wins in both motos, leading Kyle Hammontree (4-2), Currier (24), Travis McClinton (5-3) and Johnson (3-7) into the top five overall. P/W (4-6): 1.
