STORV AND PHOTOS BV ROBERT VAN DAMME PHOENIX, Al, MAR. 31 ryan Allen, a young man of few • words, let his riding do the talking as he captured the combined 125/250cc Pro class at the third round of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Series presented by Mel Clayton, FMF, Bent, Franklin & Associates, Gordy's and Arrowhead Extreme Outfitters. "I had a good start in the first moto," said the Apache Honda/Bent/ Pro-Action/DSC -sponsored Allen, "and after the start of the second, I took my time getting by riders." Allen led in the first moto, followed by Bryan Clevenger, Jimmy Lewallen, Kyle Killebrew, Matt Murphy, Brandon Schlensig and Ed Foedish. On lap two, Killebrew took over third when Lewallen went down in the first turn. Just before the halfway point, Schlensig passed Murphy for the fourth position. Allen went unchallenged for the moto win, while Clevenger pulled clear of Killebrew. Schlensig finished fourth, pursued by Murphy, Foedish and Lewallen. Killebrew pulled the holeshot on his 125cc Honda, over Murphy and Clevenger. Allen went wide on the second comer and started last. "I just got tangled up with some riders and then, in the second corner, I almost went over the berm," said Allen. Lewallen passed Clevenger at the infield tabletop for third. Then Clevenger got underneath Lewallen in the first corner to retake third. Allen had gotten around Schlensig and Foedish for fifth. Then, by halfway, Allen passed Lewallen for fourth. Clevenger, trying the same move he had earlier on Lewallen, went on the inside of Murphy in the first turn. However, this time Clevenger and Murphy touched and they both went down. That moved Allen into second, 28 APRIL 25, 2001 • cue • division. Russ broke away from Jacob Becchina, who had to come from behind in both legs to get second. Third overall went to Jordan Hunter, with Drake Hallock and Cory Porter rounding out the top five. CN followed by Lewallen. Clevenger passed Lewallen for third in front of the grandstands. Allen closed the gap when Killebrew came up short on the back-straight tabletop. Then Allen, driving from the outside of the whoops, got alongside Killebrew. "He [Killebrew] tried to brakecheck at the last corner after the whoops to slow me up," said Allen, "but I saw it coming and cut back underneath for the pass." Clevenger and Lewallen both dropped to the back of the pack on the sixth lap. Allen pulled away for the win, followed by Killebrew, Murphy, Schlensig, Foedish, Clevenger and Lewallen. Cody Thomas worked from behind in both motos and took the Pee Wee (4-6) overall. In moto one, Austin Wells pulled the holeshot, followed by Bailey Bruner, Cody McElroy, Andrew Campagna and Cody Thomas. Bruner went to the outside at the end of the back straight and outdrove Wells to take over the lead. Thomas passed Campagna in the whoops for fourth. Then, on lap two, Thomas went by McElroy just out of turn two. Trenton White and Tyler Monks in sixth and seventh were applying pressure to Campagna. Just as the white flag came out, Thomas went by Wells at the finish-line jump for second. Bruner held on for the win, followed by Thomas, Wells, e n e _ s Arizona Stml Fairgreunds .....nix, Arizona ilesuils: Man:h 31, 2011 lllound 31 McElroy, Campagna, Monks and White. Bruner was back out in front in the second moto. Then, as they came into the whoops, Bruner and Wells stumbled into each other, with Wells taking over first. McElroy was third, with Thomas in fourth, followed by White and Jacob Fox. On lap two, Bruner slid out in the infield section. McElroy and Thomas got by before Bruner could remount. Then Thomas got alongside McElroy in front of the grandstands, completing the pass as they came onto the start straightaway. Thomas, with some encouragement from his dad, was doing the double jump at the end of the back straight; that was the part of the course where Thomas made tfme on Wells. Thomas made the pass for the lead at the finish-line jump over Wells. With one lap remaining, Wells tried to repass Thomas. As they came to the end of the back straight, Thomas doubled through and went wide. Wells went to the inside, but Thomas had a better drive. As they came into the whoops, the leaders had to split around a lapper. Wells went to the inside on the final corner, while Thomas powered from the outside. Thomas had the speed to hold off Wells for the win. McElroy was third, followed by Bruner. Taylor Russ was perfect in both of his motos to win the Pee Wee (7-8) P/W (4-6): 1. Cody Thomas (Cob); 2.
