"Brian got on the bike, and we left in the van," Abbott said. "We were on the road, and [the Team Green pit crew] called us on the radio and said Brian rode back with a broken nose or something like that. So we ended up flipping a U-ee and coming back to the pits. "The rear fender was broken off and stuff, but they did a couple things [to fix it]. I got on the bike from there and basically rode the rest of the race by myself. "I thought we had a really good shot because we were starting second to last, which I thought was going to be tough but it wasn't. Without all the rain and wind, it really would've been tough to start in the back. "I'm kind of bummed that we didn't win it, but that's racing." Campbell and Staab became the fourth different winners in the fouryear history of the $10,OOO-to-thewinner race. "It feels really good," Campbell grinned. "It's something to win a race, but to come and win a race that you've been trying and putting 100percent in for three years, it just feels good to put it under my belt. "The hardest thing is to try not to think about the purse because it is a large amount of money for off-road racing - 10 grand. Tim and I are pretty happy." As of now, the air dates are April 27 (5:00 and g:OO p.m,) and 2B (9:00 a.m,) on Speedvision. Naturally, check your local listings to be sure. As has been the case for the past few years, the bikes and ATVs took a slightly different path than the trucks and buggies near the end of the race, A few miles after the final pit in Crystal. the bike/ATV course turned due south for a tighter, more technical loop while the truck/buggy competitors continued east a few more miles, finally reaching the same course used in the morning for outbound traffic. Both courses came together again just after the last paved road crossing. but the actual mileage was different for both courses. That means comparing finish times is not a true comparison. but the Campbell/Staab Honda did have a quicker time than Troy Herbst's leading "truggy." 4:54:55 to 4:56:53. .Johnny Campbell has been recovering from an injury to his upper arm. caused when he crashed at a local SoCal race last month. Due to popular demand. after last year's Nevada 2000 aroundthe-state race. he'lI present the three-day Nevada 1000 next year, Day one will consist of approximately 350 miles from Las Vegas to Ely; day two will be around 302 miles to Tonopah, and the last day will be some 3BB miles back to Vegas. It'll run from June 19-23, 2002. Nevada highway patrol troopers had a field day nabbing chase vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit. Later that night. more law enforcement vehicles and personnel appeared in town, though they were there for the 17th annual Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Relay running race. Though no motorcycle participants in Terrible's Town did double duty. two of the truck racers Deputies Charles Braden and Steve Williams of the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department - planned to run their relay legs some time after finishing Terrible's Town in their Ford Ranger. Among those ticketed was Over 30 Pro winner Daryl Folks. who attributed the delay to him missing his planned rendezvous with partner Rick Bozarth at Crystal's pit seven. (It was his first miss there after three consecutive years of meeting him at that point.l Thus, Bozarth not only had no partner to switch off with there. but he also lacked a pit crew to give him fuel. In a sporting gesture. the Team Green pit waved him over. gassed him up and sent him on his way. Toby Bryant and Dayton Raper finished a respectable fourth Open Pro. seventh overall motorcycle, on their AI Baker's XR's Only XR650R. However, their chase box van DNFed at the Highway 95 and 160 junction and they spent the rest of the race there. Shane Esposito and Andy Grider earned the dubious distinction of being first out of the race when the engine in their Price Racing/Pro Circuit/MSR KX500 cold-seized a mile off the start. After the race, Destry Abbott said, "I told Brian [Brown] that we're even now since I lost it at the Nevada 2000. He got a kick out of that." Abbott crashed on the fifth day of the six-day race last year after having led since the start. and he finished in the hospital. while Brown rode the last day and a half solo to at least get a finish. Ty Davis and Russell Pearson. who won round one. DNFed when the engine "popped" and died in the first half of the race, This marked the first time that Danny Cooper teamed up with David Pearson. but their partnership obViously worked. with the pair easily winning 250cc Pro and earning fourth overall on their Pro Circuit/Dunlop/IMS-backed VZ250. Unofficially, Team Green's Destry Abbott/Brian Brown now occupy first in points with 406. Honda's Steve Hengeveld/Jonah Street are second with 393 points followed by Johnny CampbelllTim Staab at 375 points. These are unofficial tallies. though. (Hen); 5.
