Visalia's Timmermans also bagged
the top two spots in the 250cc Pro
event, with Paul taking both rounds
ahead of Dieter, both on Yamahas. In
the first round, Dieter held the
holeshot award and battled Boothe
and Paul for most of the first two laps.
Paul moved into second at the end of
lap two, and soon the brothers were
roosting each other for the lead, with
Paul sneaking to the front with less
than two tours of the track left.
When Paul built a comfortable lead
in the second round, Dieter backed off.
The second 250cc Pro/Intermediate
round was highlighted by a terrific battie between Honda riders Doug
Schmidt and Buffalo Saito for the Intermediate lead; it lasted almost the entire
race, until Saito stalled briefly with less
than two laps left, costing him a
chance at the overall. For the second
week in a row, Schmidt led Saito and
Steve Nelson in the trophy line.
Pipes, the R&D-sponsored Kawasaki youngster from Madera, continued
his weekly showdown with Yamaha's
Beau Weigand in both the 80cc X and
80cc Intermediate classes. This
week's encounter was expected to be
another tight one. Pipes got his customary good drive off the line and led
early, with Weigand tucked into second and Honda rider Wesley Norris
third. However, Norris soon began to
fade slightly, while Pipes began to
inch his way further ahead, lap by
lap, and they finished in that order.
In the 80cc Intermediate contest,
Weigand held the lead over Pipes as
they neared the end of the first lap,
but he crashed and never recovered.
Weigand tried to badger Pipes in the
second moto but did not succeed, and
Pipes wound up winning his second
class of the day. Running alone in the
60cc Intermediate class, he collected
win number three, and his fourth victory came in the 60cc X contest when
he fmished with nearly a half-lap lead
over the rest of the field!
The 80cc Beginner class had the
largest field of riders of the weekend,
forcing a divisional split in which the
top six first-round finishers faced off in
the Division One second moto, with
riders carrying finishing positions with
them. So, even though Honda rider
Casey Jackson won that battle, his
fourth-place "qualifier" finish held him
out of the overall tally. Honda-mounted Cody Medlem, who won his firstmoto divisional, did not have to pass
Jackson in the finale and, once in the
runner-up spot, used his advantage
by setting it on cruise control.
Six riders remain undefeated in the
points standings for the Northern
Division after this second meeting.
Winners for the second week in a row
include KTM riders R.J. Mendez in the
50cc (0-6) class, Grayson Swift in the
60cc Novice class, and Jared Ney in
the 60cc (0-8) Beginner class, as well
