Gold Rush Enduro: Rick Daniel went prospectln' and came up with the gold at Red Mountain, California, site of the second round of the District 37 Enduro series. AMA District 37 Enduro Series Round 2: &old Rush Enduro Daniel Digs Up the Gold Bv MATT FREEMAN RED MOUNTAIN, CA, MAR. 18 ick Daniel, the reigning District 37 Enduro champion, had no problem defending his crown at round two, hosted by the Prospectors MC. John Burr Cycles/Torco-backed Daniel proceeded to route the competition by a whole point, for the second time in as many rounds. Armed with a KX500, Daniel dropped four points throughout the two-loop event, despite a confrontation with a rock on the second loop that left his exhaust pipe mangled and bashed. Infamous for their tough and grueling desert enduros, the Prospectors put together an approximately 80mile course that consisted of 15 checkpoints - seven in the first loop and eight in the second. The course was actually completed two weeks ahead of schedule, but the Bureau of Land Management denied the use of the sand hills, a portion of the Spangler Hill riding area, which makes for good second-loop special tests. Instead, the Prospectors found an area near the sand hills that had not been used in a District 37 event of any kind in several years. The change made for a fresh and fun special test in the second loop that claimed one point from the top riders, Daniel included. At the start of the first loop, riders headed toward Charlie's Place, an area known for its rocky trails. Two checkpoints were placed fairly early in the loop, and staying on time was R 54 APRIL 18,2001 • C' U c I e somewhat easy, but, not long after crossing Trona Road, competitors found themselves in a 36-mph special test. Only a handful of riders including Daniel, Husqvarna 570mounted Chuck McBurney, KDX200mounted Billy Fulmer and CR500 rider Robert Baehr - could stay on time, and a check at the end of the test penalized those who were late. A score of one was common for the check, but some A riders even dropped two minutes. Four-stroke A rider Dana Van Stee saw his chance at an overall thrown out the window when his computer sensor started acting up just before the test. Van Stee pulled into the check two minutes late aboard his IMS-backed Husqvama 570. The remainder of the first loop was fun and easy for most riders to stay on schedule, as was the start of the second loop. However, McBurney, competing in the Open A class, managed to card a late point at check 10. The mistake may have prevented him from finally beating out Daniel for an overall win. Check 11 was a check-in for the start of the first special test in the second loop. Those who were riding hot and checked in at the beginning of their minute definitely capitalized when they reached check 12. Van Stee, McBurney and Daniel recorded the lowest scores, each ,dropping three points, while 200cc A-class rider Fulmer and Open Vet A rider Baehr, along with a half-dozen other riders, carded fours at the check. n e _ s After a long reset, riders headed toward the new section of course that the Prospectors had laid out. A check-in started a long and rocky special test that had even Daniel two to three minutes late at times. A speed change in the middle of the test helped riders get closer to their minute, but still no one zeroed check 14, which ended the test. The usual suspects, including Daniel, McBurney, Fulmer, Van Stee and Baehr, all claimed a score of one at check 14. With only one checkpoint remaining, which was primarily a time-keeping check, it was the special test that helped decide the winner. "The second loop was a lot of fun, especially the last special test," said Daniel, who has won the Prospectors' Gold Rush Enduro twice before, the last time in 1988. "It was easier than your typical Prospectors race, but the layout of the trails, the speeds and everything was well-planned-out and made it really fun." The riders in second through fourth all showed a score of five, but McBurney beat out third-placed Fulmer and fourth-placed Baehr on tie breakers to take second overall and the Open A-class honors. Despite having troubles that included a broken clutch cable on the second loop, Van Stee managed a class win and rounded out the top five. eN Gold Rush Enduro Red Mountain, Califomla Results: March 18, ZOOI [Round ZI O/A: 1.
