• Starwest Motocross Park Kearney's Comeback By MIKE AND BARBARA PALUZZI MORENO VALLEY, CA, MAR. 24 The West Coast Motorsports Spring Series opener at Starwest was a success, as the pits were full and riders showed up from all over to get back into the race season. The most excit~ ing race of the night was between West Coast Motorsports-backed Donnie Kearney and RPM's Shawn Hayes. Kearney, who has taken some time off from racing and has been working hard with Kurt Henriksen, took the overall win in the Supermini class and finished second in the 80cc (7- 11) class. In the first Supermini moto, Kearney nailed the holeshot, with Hayes close behind. Kearney held off Hayes for two laps. Then Hayes passed Kearney by going wide in a tum. Kearney stayed close, and when Hayes stalled his bike in a turn, Kearney took over. Kearney took the win, followed by Jason Hildebrand and B.J. Bohrer. Hayes took the holeshot in moto two, and again the two went to battle. Hayes was determined not to let Kearney by, and he crossed the finish first. Kearney was second and Hildebrand third. Kearney's 1-2 finish earned him the overall, with Hildebrand second and Bohrer third. The two rivals would meet again in the 80cc (7- 11) division. In the first mota, Kearney took the holeshot. Hayes was close behind, but Kearney turned it up a few notches to secure his lead. Kearney took the win, followed by Hayes and Mike Meade. In the second moto, Kearney again took the holeshot, followed by Hayes and Meade. Hayes attempted several pass attempts, but Kearney held him off until the last lap, when they encountered some lappers. Passing a lapped rider in the tum, Kearney went down. Hayes quickly took over the lead. The checkered flag came out, and it was Hayes, Kearney and Meade. Hayes' 2-1 finish earned him the overall win, with Kearney second and Meade third. The biggest class of the night was the 80cc Beginner (12-16) class, as 23 riders lined the gate. Aaron Gwin was the big winner, holding off a very fast Nick Valdez and Bryan Barton. Gwin finished 1-1 for the overall. Barton (2-4) eamed second and Valdez (5-2) took third. Patrick Terry and Josh Bagge battled in the 250cc Intermediate class. Bagge took the first-mota win, followed by Terry and Cody Hertel. Bagge pulled the second-mota holeshot but went down, allowing Terry and Ilertel by. Terry cruised in for the win, followed by Hertel and Bagge. The night came to a premature end as fog rolled in during the second round of motos. Five classes were unable to finish their second motos due to the heavy mists. First-mota results were final, and in the 125cc Beginner class that was okay for Honda rider Ryan Fisher. Kasey Morris pulled the holeshot, -followed by Joey Dobson and Brandon Urzua. Fisher started poorly but quickly charged through the pack. By lap two, Fisher was on Morris' back tire. Fisher passed Morris in the whoops for the lead and then cruised in for the win. Dobson was second and Urzua took third. Pre- Entries Only! No Post Entries!
