Ward a Boy Wonder
at REM Saturday MX
By ROCKY HASH
SAN BERNARDINO, 'A, MAR. 17
Pro Valve Motocross Race ServicefWind-lWS·
backed Gordon Ward flew his bright blue TM
250 to en impressive win over a competitive
field of Combined Pro riders during Racing
Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday
motocross.
At the start of moto one, Niklas Mansson
led the charge with the holeshot aboard his
VZ426F. Motocross Action/White Brothers
rider Willy Musgrave tucked up into second on
his CR500, while Casey Lytle had his Team
Kawasaki/Pro Circuit KXI25 singing high
pitch in third. Ward started ninth but was up to
fifth by the end of lap one. Lytie took over the
lead on lap two. Ward was also charging, and
soon he was right behind Musgrave, in third.
By the halfway point, Lytie had a five-second
cushion lind appeared to have the mota win
sewn up. However, Ward hlld other plans; he
continued to ride hard and began to inch back
toward the factory Kawasaki pilot. Late in the
race, Lytle seemed to be tiring, and Ward took
full advantage of the situation. Right before
the white flag came out, Ward mede his move
and slid past Lytle in a flat sweeper with a
sweet square-off maneuver. taking over the
point. Lytie was unable to retaliate on the last
circuit, llInd Ward took the moto win in an
impressive fashion. Musgrave held off Mansson to the checkers for a solid third-place ride.
RM250-mounted Chris Thompson filled out
the top five.
In moto two, Z-Racing's Mark Tilley ripped
the holeshot aboard a potent Rick Peterson
Motorsports·modified KTM SX 125. Honda
rider Mike Collier ran second, while Lytle
again gated well and slipped into third. Ward

was right in his shadow in fourth. By lap three,
Lytle had moved up to front, but he was
unable to shake Ward, who now followed him
in second place. Just as in the first moto. Lytie
began to separate himself from Ward during
the opening half of the race. only to have the
determined Vet racer reel him in late in the
race. This time around, Ward didn't wait until
the last lap; he passed Lytie coming out of the
back canyon section right at the 15-minute
mark in the 20-minute contest. Once out
front, Ward simply walked away and won the
mota with a comfortable six-second cushion.
Lytle was again second best, while Tilley
rolled across the line third.
On the day, Ward took home the lion's
share of the purse with his inspired 1- J finishes. The runner-up position was Lytle's by
virtue of his 2-2 rides, while Musgrave was
third with his solid 3-4 performances. Collier
finished up fourth overall with a consistent 6~5
tally. and Tilley filled out the top five after
posting 9-3 scores on the day.

LAS VEGAS, NV, MAR. 10
Michael "Buddy" Parker, the minicycJe racer
extraordinaire from the Las Vegas area,
emerged from the wild and woolly 85cc Intermediate contest at race five of the Casino
Towns Motocross Series with the overaJl title.
Along the way, he demonstrated in eye-opening fashion just exactly how the Olympic scor·
ing system used in motocross works. He also
put an exclamation point on the old saw,
"Never give up, fight for every position- - a
heroic move in the very last comer of moto
two was just enough to earn him one more
spot, breaking up a four-way tie and moving
him from fourth to first overall.
Intermediate fast guy Josh laFountaine,
who makes a habit of holeshots, sprang
another one on the combined 85cc gate.
Novice ace Tony Esposito was holding second, with Parker lurking in the weeds. A quick
pass put Parker on LeFountaine's rear fender.
where he hammered on him for a lap and a
half before getting by in the back section.
Intermediate Devin Sullivan moved in on
Esposito to make the battle for the lead a
four-way dogfight. On the white-flag lap, Parker stretched the lead a little and took the win,
while laFountaine biffed it at the finish-line
tabletop, dropping to fourth.
For race two, laFountaine pulled another
jackrabbit start. Esposito and Justin
Fraughton were right behind him, as a sizable
chunk of the field went down in a big startstraight pileup. Sullivan and Novice Patrick
Provencher moved up to challenge for the
lead. Surging toward the front, Parker lost the
wheels· and several positions • at the finish·
line tabletop. While Sullivan and Fraughton
were passing and repassing for second,
Glen Helen Raceway Parte Gordon Ward (3) passed Casey Lytle (57) for the lead and the
win in the first Combined Pro moto. He went on to take the second-moto win and the
overall at the REM Saturday motocross in San Bernardino, California.
