Dave Coupe Classic E Street Bridge Track (Left) Michael Brandes stands tall on his Yamaha en route to dominating both the 125cc and 250CC Pro classes at the fifth annual Dave Coupe Classic. (BeloW! By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS PHOTOS BY JIM ENOS MARYSVILLE, CA, MAR. 11 hen Dave Coupe sets out on his annual journey to the E Street Bridge riding area, he has one thing in mind; to build a classic, "old school" motocross track that starts out smooth as a baby's bottom yet quickly turns into a whooped-out, abusive monster. Much to the delight of the former factory Maico rider, that's exactly how things went. "This is"the stuff that separates the men from the boys," Coupe said. "A lot of the tracks are kind of supercrossy these days, and this is the kind of outdoor stuff we rode on back in the '70s and '80s - fast and rough." Although Michael Brandes wasn't riding Pro back then, he proved to have the skill and stamina on this day, as he absolutely dominated both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at the fifth annual Dave Coupe Classic. Rebounding from injuries suffered at the Anaheim Supercross earlier this year, the MotoXXX/DGY /O'Neal/ Yoshimura rider, piloting a healthy Yl250F, led all but one lap in all four motos en route to a clean sweep of both classes. For his efforts on the day, Brandes was rewarded with a healthy portion of the $6000 Pro purse. The 250cc Pro class featured a nearly full, 20-rider gate, and although Brandes went holeshotless in both motos, he took over the lead within a few turns. Standing, with his head over the bars, Brandes attacked several of the whooped-out, highspeed turns and steadily put time on the pack. Brandes went unchallenged for two convincing victories. Just as impressive as his riding style was the fact that he was on a YZ250F. "I only came up here today with the one bike, to get in some training for the upcoming AMA Outdoor Nationals," said Brandes. "It's great to be here today because I've always missed this race due to the Supercross schedule. It's a fun track, and although you need the horsepower to get through the sand, I think it's really how fast you ride through the rough sections that makes the biggest difference. " In both motos, Scott Davis, Brian Roth and David Boothe raced for second, as Brandes proved untouchable. In the end, Davis placed second overall on the day via a 2-3 score. "I held my own out there today rode clean and didn't get hurt," said Maxxis Tires/No Toil/One Industriesbacked Davis. "It gets tough to hold on out there when it's rough, and I wanted to be careful. It was a good day." For Brandes, the 125cc Pro class was almost a carbon copy, except for a charged-up Daniel Blair in moto one. The Mach 1 Motorsports/Swede Tech/RG3/Thor-backed rider pulled the holeshot, and even after Brandes passed him, Blair stuck to his rear fender for several laps. "I knew Brandes would be hard to beat, so I tried to get a jump on him early," Blair said. "After he passed me, I figured if I stuck with him, I would get a cushion on the rest of the field." Blair's thinking paid off; he kept Brandes in sight while also keeping Nathan Tiearney and Davis at bay. At the checkers, Blair ended up second. Tiearney came across in third. In moto two, Blair was once again running behind Brandes, but he backed off a little after getting passed by Evan Laughridge and Nathan Tiearney. Laughridge went on to take a solid second. Tiearney, aboard a PJ1/Pro Action/Dirt Digits/ Scott-backed Suzuki, posted a solid 3-4 score for third overall. "We have a sand track out where I live, so I'm pretty comfortable on this track," said Tiearney. "I just tried to find the smooth lines out there and ride my own race." Eric Nye and Eric McCrummen went at it in the 125 Intermediate and Schoolboy classes, and when all the bar-to-bar brake-checking action was finished, Nye, aboard a DHMA/Factory Effex-backed Yamaha, came out the victor, winning all four motos. McCrummen, who just recently made the jump from the Mini ranks, took impressive runner-up spots in all four motos. The always-exciting 125cc Beginner class started off with a huge seven-rider first-turn pile-up. Miguel Rangel escaped the mayhem and went on to take the moto win after early leader Brian Brockman took a mid-race off-track excursion, though he still finished fourth. Brockman rebounded in the second moto with a strong win, and his 4-1 score proved good enough for the overall. 1:1III ESInet IrilItle Tradl Marysville, c.lifworia llesults: MardI 11, ZlDI Pee Wee Track 50 FIT: 1.
