OMRA 6ran Prix Series Rounds 1-2: 6 odnoe Hills 6P Russell, Bozarth Too Good at Goodnoe By GOLDENDALE, WA, MAR. 10-11 igh on top of the Columbia River Gorge, in the rolling hills of southern Washington, two days of intense racing marked the inaugural Goodnoe Hills Gran Prix. Saturday's racing saw Spokane's Peter Russell dominate the AA/Expert race aboard his KTM/Dave Russell's European Motorcycles/MSR-backed KTM 250 SX. From the dead-engine start, Russell pulled away from the field from the holeshot to the checkers, never challenged but followed closely by Myke Landis and Jason Sigfrid. "For the first race at Goodnoe, they put on a good show," said Russell. "[It was a] high-speed, don't-Jetoff-the-gas-till-you-have-to type of course - lots of fun, but it needed some whoops." On Sunday, Rick Bozarth came out for a rip on his MSR/Cooper Oil/KTM of Gresham/Konnell Construction/ Silkolene-sponsored KTM 380 MXC and took home the first-place trophy. The extra displacement came in handy on the big hills of the 2.5-mile motocross track and the high-speed out-sections, especially since Bozarth got a three-kick start and had to work his way through the pack. "The 380 gunned 'em down pretty well," said the friendly Oregon native. "It smoothed out all the corners and ate up the 250s on the hills. It was a good bike for this track." Due to scheduling conflicts, Russell and Bozarth couldn't race on the same day, which was too bad, since their lap times were nearly identical. However, there was no lack of excitement or competition in other classes, as some 300 participants vied for glory in six separate races. A team race started each day, followed by the Amateur and Expert races. On Saturday, Walter Schwarz served notice in the Four-Stroke Expert class, and Robert Stevens won the Open Expert contest. Josh Steiner took the 250cc Amateur honors. Dave Russell, Peter's father, won the Over 50 Amateur class. Sunday's event brought a whole new list of names to the roster. Kelly Hill won the 250cc Expert division and Dylan Murdock bested the FourStroke Experts. For six months, members of the Over The Bars Gang have been working (with a caterpillar) on this private stretch of land in south-central Wash- H Sandhill. MX Park: Damon Bradshaw was six for six in moto wins at round one ot the IMS Pro Series/Carolina Ultra Series in Chesterfield, South Carolina. The Over 30 A contest featured the same names. Liles took the overall. KORE Cycles' Koenig finished second, with Andrews Motosports' Mike Andrews third. Dickson was fourth and Chris Wagner fifth. B.J. Huntsinger continued his winning ways. After winning a 2000 Loretta Lynn's Championship, Huntsinger is dominating the Schoolboy class as he prepares for another National title run. In moto one, Travis Flowers pulled the holeshot, followed by Jeremy Jacobs, Huntsinger, Daniel Hurleu and Jeremy Allison. By the end of lap one, Huntsinger had assumed the point and was beginning to pull away at a rate of five seconds per lap. By the checkers, this added up to a more-than-30-second lead on Flowers, who himself had a gap on Allison. The top five were rounded out by Hurleu and Jacobs. Moto two again saw Flowers get out of the gate quickly, but Huntsinger wasted no time, again taking the lead on lap one and destroying the class by 30 seconds at the line. The final was again the same, except that Austin Cooley placed fifth in this moto. CN Sandhills MX PIlrll Chesterfield, South Carolina Results: March 4, 2001 [Round 1) 50 SHAFT: 1. With the considerable help of local landowners and the hard work of a few individuals, Goodnoe Hills has quickly become the talk of the Northwest racing scene, and for good reason. The huge, natural-terrain motocross track is almost entirely visible from the pit area and is very adaptable to off-road racers (i.e., no triples or stadium whoops). Some of the hills on the course are steep and long enough to provide quite a challenge for small-bore bikes. The organization of the pit area, sign-up area and start/finish area were exemplary for a first-time shakedown cruise. Rumors, speculation and hearsay allude to the possibility of a major off-road event being held at Goodnoe Hills in the near future, and if it were up to anyone who's been there, the rumors would be true.
