District 37 Big Six Grand Prix Series Round 2: Glen Helen Raceway Park (Left) Despite a broken toe, Scott Myers dominated the second round of the District 37 Big Six Grand Prix Series, taking four wins In five events. STORV Bv MATT FREEMAN PHOTOS BV BETH LARoCK SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAR. 3-4 ~ cott Myers was simply dominant ~ at the ninth annual Prairie Dogs Grand Prix at Glen Helen Raceway Park. The veteran KTM rider entered five events and came away with four wins throughout two days of racing at round two of the District 37 Big Six Grand Prix Series. Even more impressive was the fact that he had broken a toe just a week prior at a WORCS race in Phoenix. Despite the pain, he shoved his swelled foot into an oversized boot and went to work. "It's really something for me to come out here and run with guys like Johnny Campbell, Steve Hengeveld and Ty Davis," said Myers. "KTM and Scot Harden have provided me with some awesome motorcycles, so it's really fun to come out here with my family and spend the weekend." Myers' performance at Glen Helen was reminiscent of the stranglehold that off-road legend Larry Roeseler had over the Adelanto Grand Prix in the early '90s. However, in the first event of the weekend, Yamaha/Dl H Racing/Answer/FMF -backed Kurt Caselli showed Myers and everyone else that he, too, came to win. Caselli was the only rider to defeat Myers, doing so in the Unclassified event aboard a YZ250. Myers piloted a KTM 520 to second place in that event, with American Honda's Hengeveld and FMF/Goat Eyewear/John Burr/ Kawasaki-mounted Joey Lanza rounding out the top four. All four riders would end up playing key parts in the outcome of the weekend. The Unclassified race proved to riders that the Prairie Dogs had definitely done their homework when laying out the 10-mile course. The circuit consisted of the Glen Helen National Motocross track, a pavement road, ridgeline trails, a creek, and a short, tight wooded section that favored handguards. Though the course was more fast than technical, Caselli proved that a 250 or even a 125 could compete with the bigger bikes. On Saturday, contestants lined up for the start of the Four-Stroke/Dual Sport event, which boasted riders such as Myers, Davis, Campbell, Jimmy Lewis, Paul Krause, Tim Staab and Hengeveld. Montclair Yamaha/Big Gun's Davis, Myers and Cannondale-mounted Jimmy Lewis got the jump on the rest of the talented line, but when the checkered flag came out after three laps, Myers had a 13-second cushion on runner-up Davis. Campbell was a minute and a half back in third, followed by KTM's Krause. As darkness fell, Myers and company once again took to the starting line for the famed Prairie Dogs night team race. Myers and Lewis teamed up last year in the mud to win the event, but new and faster competition with many miles of night-riding experience showed up with hopes of ruining Myers and Lewis' plan of two in a row. Instead of running the entire 10mile course, the ridgeline trails were cut out for safety reasons, but riders were still expected to compete for 90 minutes, switching riders every lap. Baja 2000 champions Campbell and Staab might have been the early favorites, but at the end of the first circuit, the Myers/Lewis team was neck and neck with Davis and Caselli. Campbell and Staab roared in a close third, with the Gas Gas-mounted team of Jeff Capt and Craig Adams fourth. The KX250-mounted team of Joey Lanza and Dave Ondas made their first rider switch just outside of the top 10, but after 90 minutes of racing they had turned their race around. As the laps wore on, the Davis/Caselli and Lewis/Myers teams pulled away from Campbell and Staab, sometimes passing each other in the pits during the rider switch. The two lead teams were never more than a few seconds apart until the YZ426F quit in the back section of the course with Davis aboard. At that point, all Green's Oakley Lehman and Yamahamounted Tod Sciacqua early on. Lehman was the early 250cc-c1ass leader, but Lanza managed to run him down, leaving Lehman in sixth. eN Lewis and Myers had to do was play it safe until the end, which they did. The XR650-mounted Campbell/Staab team moved up into second place, but by the white-flag lap, the race was for third. The Lanza/Ondas and Capt/Adams team had traded places several times throughout the event, but on the last lap Capt left the pits in third, with Lanza chasing. However, just before crossing the finish line, the Capt/Adams Gas Gas ran out of gas, giving the hard-charging Lanza/ Ondas team the final podium position. Capt pushed the bike across the finish line to take fourth. On Sunday morning, Honda's Johnny Campbell, who recently turned 30, entered his first Vet race. The trio of Campbell, Adams and Myers had a close race going early on.
