AMA United States Mega Series Round 1: Muddy Creek Raceway Ward got the second-moto holeshot and checked out for the win. Bradshaw was hung up midpack and charging. Walker was second until Bradshaw got to the front. He got by Walker, but Ward was long gone. Boruff then passed Walker but couldn't hold the pace and Walker passed him back on the last lap for third, and Summey followed Walker through and claimed fourth. In the first moto of the 250cc Pro class, Walker was first to the turn, but he braked too heavily and Suzuki- STORV AND PHOTOS BV DANNV FLEENOR BLOONTVlll£, TN, MAR. 3-4 amon Bradshaw and Larry Ward each went home with a win in the Pro class at Dunlop Tire Weekend. The weather forecast couldn't have been more wrong, as the weather turned out great for the weekend and the racing turned out to be even better for the United States Mega Series opener at Muddy Creek Raceway. It was supposed to snow and rain all weekend; that didn't happen. Many people were wearing shorts all weekend, and several left with sunburns. There was some light drizzle over Saturday night, which wet the track some but left no bad or deep puddles. Early on, it looked as if Hondamounted Bradshaw couldn't be stopped and wouldn't be beat. He was fast and smooth. Ward was riding borrowed bikes and struggling to get them set up. Kevin Walker was working to get back up to speed after knee surgery last year. Josh Summey is fresh out of the B class and coming up to speed fast. Jon Boruff is just back riding and showing good speed. Add in Michigan's Jason McDonald, the Tuerck brothers from New Hampshire, Virginia's Tim Muterspaugh, and the rest of the Pro riders, and you have the ingredients for some hot racing. Yamaha Cycle Center/Pro Actionbacked Yamaha rider Walker, Moto Planet's Ward, Yamaha rider Richard Prather, and Carl's Cycle/Pro Honda Chemicals/No Fear/Alpinestars/RenthaI rider Bradshaw battled in the first 125 Pro moto. Bradshaw got to third on the first lap and started pressuring Ward. Bradshaw dived inside Ward at the infield downhill behind the start line and then set out after Walker. You could have covered the three of them with a blanket as they rode fender to fender. In the back woods section, Bradshaw got a drive inside Walker and took over the lead. Ward got by Walker on the uphill whoops, but Bradshaw was gone. Ward then bobbled and Walker was back into second, and that was the way the moto ended. Kingsport Kawasaki Suzuki/T&M Communications' Boruff and Team Green/Suzuki Kawasaki of Gastonia/Fox/FMF/Shoei's Summey had a race-long battle for fourth, with each holding down the position for some laps, but at he flag it was Boruff in fourth. 38 MARCH 28, 2001 • eye • (Above) Damon Bradshaw won both125cc Pro motas a1 the opening round of the Unltecl States Mega Series. (Left) Joshua Summey (shown here in a 125cc Pro mota) scored second in the second 250cc Pro mota at Muddy Creek Raceway In Blountville, Tennessee. mounted Michigander Jason McDonald got the holeshot. Bradshaw was right with him, and he quickly shot into the lead on the downhill stairsteps. Bradshaw turned the wick up and easily took the win, with Ward finishing second. Summey worked his way through the pack, picking off riders one at a time and claiming third. Walker was fourth. In the second moto, McDonald and Bradshaw were side by side coming out of the first turn. Bradshaw went to the front, and Ward was close behind. With one lap to go, Bradshaw lost his front wheel in the rough bottom straight and hit the ground hard. Ward cruised to the moto win and the class win. Summey was on the gas, claiming second, with Boruff finishing third. Two Kawasaki riders dominated the racing in the 85cc (12-13) class. New Jersey's Jason Lawrence and Kentucky's Justin Sipes hammered each other all day, swapping positions and the lead as they ran and hid from the pack. Sipes won the first moto, with Lawrence second. Sipes led the entire second moto until the last lap, but at the chicane Lawrence e n e _ os got the inside line and the lead. Sipes fought back but got out of shape on the downhill stairsteps and Lawrence got an easy ride to the checkered flag. Kawasaki jockey Chet Malito came to the Mega Series opener with plans to win the season championship. He started off right with the holeshot in the first moto, but he fell before the first lap was over. Suzuki Kawasaki of Kingsport/Pro Action/Moto Planet's Ron "Wirehead" Jones started fourth but was on the gas; he took over the lead in the area of the start line on lap two and went on to take the win. Mark IV Cycles Suzuki rider Tam Tophan worked his way up to second at the end, with Malito working his way back to third. In the second moto, it was Jones again with the win, Malito in second and Tophan third. eN Muddy Creek Raceway Bloumnrine, Tennessee Results: March 3-4, 2001 [Round 11 125 PRO: 1.
