NETRA Enduro Series Connecticut Ramblers Snow Run Enduro the gas stop. The rest of the leaders lost seven minutes or more through the single-rutted section. Jalbert and Peterson roosted away from the field in the second-to-Iast section, dropping only one point over the fast, snowmobile-packed trail. Dennett, Fischer, Geraci and Hoginski trailed them with two points IQst each. Neil Dennett (2:48) and Peterson (2:59) made up some ground on Jalbert (3:30), but it proved to be too little, too late, as Jalbert's 16-point score earned him his very first NETRA overall victory. Riding his CRE500 on the first row over the frozen snow proved to be the ideal combination. Jalbert claims he spent most of the day wringing the big-bore out in third gear! Doug Simone took home the B High Point trophy after riding his KTM 300 EX/C to a 67 in the B Heavy class. Simone was the only B rider to finish the event without running over his hour. Amazingly, C rider Steve Witkus, the only C rider to finish the event, rode his KTM 300 EX/C to a score of 121 in the C Veteran class to earn the C High Point. Bill Johnson made it to check I 1 with a broken shock on his Honda XR250 to take the Super Senior win, while Joe Curti beat reigning Mastersclass champion Tom Farley by making it one check farther, to check three, for the Masters win. Stacey Edwards won the Women's class by default, being the only entrant. The young lady from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, diligently rode her CRE 125 to check three before running over her hour to make the win official. eN By JOE McLAUGHLIN PHOTOS BY MIKE BERNIER WEST STAFFORD, CT, FEB. 18 he NETRA Snow Run enduro is an event like no other in New England. Nobody ever knows what conditions to expect. In recent years, the event has been run during a snowstorm, or with no snow on the ground whatsoever, or with so much snow that the whole course consists of one long rut - and everything in between. Heavy-class contender Austin Jalbert had the good fortune of being on the first row in this year's deep-snow version. He took full advantage of the open snow in front of him to roost his CRE500 to the Overall High Point, the first of his career. KTM-mounted Neil Dennett gave chase, but his 18-point card fell short of Jalbert's 17, giving him second overall, first AA. Raffi Peterson rode his CRE250, broken radiator and all, to third overall, second AA. Peterson's 18 was close, losing out to Dennett on tie breakers. The section proved to be more difficult for the riders further back, as most of the section was made up of a single 18-inchdeep rut for those more than a halfdozen rows behind the leaders. Riding in the rut proved to be the safest way to tra- !Above) CRE pilot Austin Jalbert roosted to the first Overall High Point of his career at the Connecticut Ramblers Snow Run Enduro in West Stafford. (Left) Sam Fischer, also on a CRE, scored the A High Point trophy at this round of the NETRA Enduro Series. (Below right) Doug Simone took home the B High Point trophy after riding his KTM 300 EXlC to the B Heavy-class win. Simone was the only B rider to finish the event without running over his hour. Another CRE rider, Sam Fischer, took home the big A-High Point trophy, his 20-point score also earning him fourth overall. Jalbert started the day off right, setting the fast pace of only one point lost in the first section. The loop was made up of mostly virgin snow, winding through single- and double-track trail. The snow was deep enough to smooth over the rocks, making for a quick pace for the leaders. Rick Claxton, Dennett and Fischer matched Jalbert's score with one apiece. They were followed closely by the twos of Peter Tanner, Peterson, Jerry Madore, verse the section, though speed was difficult to maintain; leaving the rut without strong momentum was like jumping into a bowl of sugar. Then the course proceeded through a short section where the leaders lost no time, and most of the field lost only one minute. The last section before the gas stop was a mix of more virgin-snow rut and high-speed, snowmobilepacked trail. Several riders were able to zero the section, including Jalbert, Tanner, Geraci, Claxton, Madore, Dave Gunn, Hoginski, Nash and McRitchie. Anyone with a little snow-riding savvy used the gas-stop reset and known control to get back out on the trail as early as possible, since the ruts only became deeper as each rider passed through. Only A Bantam rider Bogle could match Jalbert's sixpoint score in the section following Snow Run Enduro West Stafford, Connecticut Raulb: feb....., 1B, 2001 O/A H-PT: Austin Jalbert (CRE). This made for a superquick pace for the leaders. Jalbert and Peterson lost one point each, followed in by several twos, including Tanner, An~hony Geraci, Claxton, Hoginski, Nash, Cooper McRitchie, Bogle and Harris. In one of the longest sections of the day, Dennett roosted his way out first with 2: 19, followed closely by Jalbert (2:26). Only Madore (3:42), Fischer (3:43) and Peterson (3:47) could come close, the rest of the field losing four minutes or more. 0:: U 0:: • lEI n __ S • MARCH 21. 2001 73
