STORV AND PHOTOS BV TONV ALESSI VICTORVIllE, CA, FEB. 24-25 - ole Siebler waged his own per,I sonal Operation Desert Storm, posting three class championships during the CMC/FMF Golden State Series finale held at the Victorville Race Complex. The two-day race was held in the high-desert town of Victorville during a stormy California weekend. Enduring freezing temperatures, rain and extreme winds, racers from Southern and Northern California and the great Northwest would face off during the Showdown. Surprisingly, the weekend's most successful racer was not from any of those regions at all, but from Idaho. That racer was Cole Siebler, and he posted three separate class championships, including both 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes and the Schoolboy (12-16) division. Up until this weekend, most people had never heard of the mild-mannered kid from Idaho, but after he posted an amazing string of victories by virtue of great starts and awesome finishes, everyone was talking about Siebler on the number-171 Suzuki. Another head-turner was Honda/ TRE racer Turbo Reif, who scored the 250cc Pro championship. "I csme into this series first from the south," he said, "and I knew [Chris) Wheeler was the one I had to beat." Reif did not disappoint. He set the pace from the get-go for a pair of moto wins during the opening day. "I love Badlands, because this track suits my riding style," Reif declared. Reif looked like he was on his way on Sunday, too, but flat-tire troubles kept him off the podium. "I knew I had enough ppints to score the championship after the first moto," he explained, "so I decided to keep it cool out there with tl:lat flat tire. I think I ended up seventh." Seventh was still good enough for Reif to earn the championship. The Mini racing was very close, as always. Blake Baggett and his flaming orange KTM edged out Cody Farrar by one point in the 50cc (7-8) class. Jeff Alessi had his work cut out for him in the 60cc (9-11) class, competing against the likes of Dustin Pipes and Trent Pugmire. Alessi rode under difficult circumstances in one moto. Thompson won Saturday's 12.5cc Pro contest. "My handlebars came loose and they moved all the way forward," Alessi recounted. "It was real hard to ride, but I knew I had to finish second - and I didl" Jeff's older brother Mike took care of business in both the 80cc (12-13) and 80cc Open classes with a sweep of all the motos he raced_ Alessi's senior Thousand Oaks Yamaha teammate Jimmy Nelson was on fire, and he posted overall wins in both the 80cc (14-16) and Supermini divisions despite some tough opposition from Daryl Ecklund, who was on the gas this weekend on his Pro Circuit Honda.
