matched Skorpion Cup provided its usual tight racing, this time between T. Bruce Brown, Trent Thomas and Kevin Brown on the MZ Skorpion singles. T. Bruce Brown and Thomas eventually gapped Kevin Brown, with the former inching his way into a small margin by the checkered flag. Most amazing in this race was Cronshaw's push from a second-wave start in Super Mono 2 on his Manx Norton to move up near the front with the Skorpion racers. Round 1 : Motocross of Marion County AHRMA Northwest Maico/CZ National Post-Vintage Series STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARK THOMPSON REDDICK, FL, MAR. 2 F or many long-time motocrossers, the true golden age of vintage bikes starts around 1975 and runs through the early 80s, a period when change was constant, with new suspension and engine technologies coming fast and furious. The Japanese bikes were starting to dominate, but the European machines were still a major force. Until recently, AHRMA riders didn't have a race series for these later-era bikes. But that's finally changed, as the new Post-Vintage MX classes for bikes built from 1975 to 1983 got their first test as a National Series in northcentral Florida, where Barry Higgins (a former factory pro, ISDT competitor, and motorcycle importer and dealer, among other things) put another notch in his belt by absolutely dominating the expert action. The wide-open grounds of Ken and Carol Blackburn's MX of Marion County welcomed just over 125 entries for eight races. Heavy rains the night before had soaked things heavily, making practice and some of the early motos slippery affairs. But it soon dried out, and a bit of tractor work took care of the ruts, creating a sometimes tight-and-technical track with multiple jumps. As you'd expect with any first-time National, there were a few bugs to deal with, including some confusion about classes, but it all got sorted out, and the racing was excellent. To give the regular vintage riders some early practice at the track, 125/250cc and 500cc Vintage classes were added, swelling the turnout and giving everyone plenty of chance to get the kinks out of throttle cables untwisted since last fall. In the crowded 250cc Grand Prix field, Randy Bailey and his Maico were the combo to beat, as they went 2/1 in the Expert class to beat out David Ellis and John Garmon. In the Intermediate ranks, Barry Lee aced both motos ahead of Bryan Bigsby's Montesa VB, in what was Bryan's second-ever vintage race. For the Historic 250cc racers, it was Tim Marks and his Honda going 2-1 to top the Experts over Corky Root, while Randy Studer took another Honda CR to the Intermediate win. The Grand Prix 500cc class is filled with big-bore Maicos and Huskqvarnas, but it was Italian tourist Furio Franceschi on a Villa 500 who won both motos of the Expert class, ahead of his traveling companion Luigi Mazzoni on a 490cc Maico and Greg Barnes on yet another Maico. In the Intermediates, Ed cue. e Sherry aced both motos on his big Husky, while Rick Smith, on a Mugen Honda, and Eric Krobath, on another Honda, rounded out the podium positions. It's a fact of life in vintage racing that getting older means you get to ride in a faster class. Such was the case in +50 action, as Michigan's Tom Boyd wheelied his Husky to a 2-2 score to best an inconsistent set of motos from Alex Krisher (4-1), Jean Ramsey (3-4) and Jeff Smith (5-3). For the Intermediates, Kim Armstrong had his Maico up front most of the time to finish 1-3, beating out Robert Eagan's Honda and Joseph Lennert's Maico. The best contest of the day was easily race number eight, a combined run-what-ya-brung moto-fest of experts from various classes, with some intermediates and novices to keep things interesting.
