AHRMA Progressive Suspension Histol"'ic Cup Sel"'ies Round 1 : DeLand Ail"'port mounted John Ellis. The runner-up spot went to Nemoto. Maney doubled up in the vintage classes, with his second win coming in BEARS. (He also earned a secondplace finish on his Norton in the modern Battle of Twins Formula 3.) The Norton rider tracked down early leader Glenn Campbell, on a BMW, to get out front and stay there. Behind them, class champ Bob Goodpaster had his hands full with Triumph-mounted Todd Welch, but the Norton rider won the drag race to the checkered flag to earn third for the day. Sportsman 500cc featured an excellent race between Ralph Auer on a BMW and Andrew Cowell on a Triumph twin. The pair swapped the lead several times before Auer got into the lead on lap seven and stayed . there the final time around. Other double winners in the vintage classes were Norton-mounted Alex McLean in Pre- 1940 and Class C Footshift, and Jay Richardson on his Ducati in 250 and 350cc GP. In the modern-bike classes, John Bancroft took his Honda to the Battle of Twins F -1 win after playing runner-up to Jonathan Glaefke's Suzuki in Sound of Thunder. The closely STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT BENSON DELAND, FL, MAR. I he schedule of events for AHRMA's pre-Daytona warm-up national touted the 500cc Premier race as the day's "Feature" event. This time, it certa inly lived up to that billing, as top British classic racer John Cronshaw came out atop a close three-way battle for the win. Cronshaw backed that up by taking the modem Super Mono 2 win, on his vintage mount. Each year, AHRMA takes over a comer of the busy Deland Municipal Airport to layout a racetrack on a portion of the former World War II naval air station. The event attracted more than 300 entries - many of them from overseas - on this hot, sunny day. Cronshaw is usually found at the controls of a super-fast BSA Gold Star, but here he was aboard a Molnar Manx Norton. He got off to a blazing start behind defending 500cc Premier champ Pat Mooney on another T 62 MARCH21,2001' cue' e Manx. Cronshaw snatched the lead from Mooney on the back section of the track, but Mooney dove back into the point position coming into turn three half-a-Iap later. By lap three of eight, BSA Gold Star-mounted Josef Brenner had moved up with the lead duo, with Norton-rider Jay Richardson not far behind in fourth. Around the halfway point, Brenner blew into the lead on the kinked straight between turns two and three. Cronshaw immediately gave chase, opening a gap over Mooney in third. The final laps saw Brenner and Cronshaw pass and repass one another several times. After following Brenner for a couple laps, Mooney moved to the lead on lap seven and managed to hold off Brenner's charge down the front straight to take the checkered flag. Mooney came home third ahead of Michael Carter on a Seeley and then Jay Richardson in fifth. Another scorcher was the Formula 750cc battle between Englishman Steve Maney on a Norton twin and racing legend Gary Nixon on a Mark McGrew Honda CR750. The pair tradn e _ s ed the lead lap after lap, until Nixon looked like he was taking things under control beginning on the sixth of eight laps. Then, a lap later, he was out, the victim of a broken gearbox. That left Maney alone out front, and the attention shifted to a battle for second between Ken Nemoto on a Moto Guzzi and Yamaha XS750- (Above left! Top BritI.h cla••lc racer .John Cron.haw rode hi.
