Code-named the OW-M 1 (the official name will be released at a later stage), the 2002 Yamaha four-stroke Grand Prix racer was tested by Japanese test riders recently at Phillip Island in Australia. The all-new, inline, four-cylinder powerplant with Yamaha's trademark five-valve head design features a chassis that comes straight from the latest YZRSOO. Many configurations were considered when deciding on an engine format for this chassis, with Yamaha concluding that an in-line-four layout offers the best balance of compactness, outright performance and power delivery. The "Ml" engine is also considerably lighter and more compact than that of the current YZF-R7 Superblke, according to Yamaha. Yamaha has officially announced what you've already read here: former 250cc Grand Prix and World Superbike Champion John Kocinski will be a test rider for the new motorcycle. Marlboro Yamaha Team riders Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa completed their European GP preseason testing program at a cool and windy Catalunya Circuit in Spain on March 8. The pair ended the two-day session feeling confident that their 2001 YZR500 machines are now well dialed in for the 500cc Grand Prix season that begins on April 8 at Suzuka, Japan, according to a release issued by the team. "We've had a very positive preseason with good results. I am feeling more integrated than ever with the bike. We have done quite a bit on engine, tires and suspension here, but it was important to also test my physical performance. I did a full-race simulation to check all the effects on my body, whJch is quite useful for my training program. Now I'm looking fofward to a week off before we go to Japan. I'll keep working, of course, but I hope to have a few days in the mountains as well.· The team will head off to Japan for the three-day test beginning on March 19. Biaggi and Checa will have the opportunity to set their bikes up for the Suzuka circuit. The team will then retum to Europe for a week off prior to the Suzuka race. Sf)( has announced that it has acqUired a majority interest in the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA). a sanctioning body of professional and sportsman drag racing throughout the United States and Canada. The addition of the IHRA strengthens SFX Motor Sports Group's position as the leading promoter of specialized motors ports events, which also includes the USHRA Monster Jam Tour, the AMA-sanctioned EA Sports Supercross Series. the IFMA Freestyle Motocross Tour, and the National Arenacross Series. While the II-event IHRA Summit Drag Racing Series is the premier attraction on the annual IHRA calendar, the 31-year-old series also sanctions more than 30 divisional events. Based in Norwalk. Ohio. the IHRA has more than 13,000 members and sanctions events at 80 racing facilities throughout North America. The IHRA will continue to operate under the leadership of the present management team, including its President Bill Bader, who will retain a minority interest in the IHRA.
