Rodney Smith (Suz) won the second round of the Grand National Cross Country Series in Macon, Georgia, March 11. Shane Watts (KTM), the winner of the opening round in Okachobee. World Four-Stroke Championships will be returning to a two-day format in 2001 for the first time since 1994. A TI-type race has been added for Saturday, April 21, with smooth- and knobby-tired classes. The track will be designed by Tom White and Gene Romero, and will be based on a 3/8-mile oval, using the infield with a jump similar to the Ascot IT. Sunday will feature the traditional motocross. The CMC/Bent Clothing Spring Classic MX Nationals for the Southern Califomia region will be starting on Saturday, March 24th at Competition Park and will all be held on Saturday nights this year. The gates open at 4 p.m. and practice starts at 5:30 p.m. In Northern California, the series will open at Club Moto on Saturday, April 14 and will be held during the day. The promoters of the AMA/Yamaha Western Four-Stroke National Motocross Series have purchased airtime for the first round. The Phoenix race will air on Speedvision on March 21, at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. On February 13, the EI Cajon, Califomia. City Council approved a conditional-use permit for EI Cajon Speedway Park a motocross track. Construction of the six-acre site is underway, with opening day scheduled for early April. Based on the success of last year's event where the tournament raised some $30,000 for the Loma Linda Emergency Trauma Center, San Bemardino, California's Glen Helen Raceway will again play host to the Glen Helen Charity Golf Tournament. Former 500cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz competed in the opening round of the AMA Grand National Cross Country Series in Okeechobee, Florida, on Tuesday, finishing in the top four of the Industry class. Riding a Suzuki DR2400, Schwantz finished either third or fourth in the class, though official results haven't been compiled yet. Schwantz's hands were a reminder of the event, as both now feature blisters. "I think it was a spinning grip, - Schwantz said of the cause of the damaged hands. "I probably wasn't on the ideal bike for the deep sand. I started next to Dick Burleson and figured I'd follow him. He put three guys between us real qUick and then he just disappeared into the Okeechobee sunrise. I fell a couple of times after that. • Schwantz said his Suzuki teammates weren't much help. Antunez left Oakland with an insurmountable 991 points, with Jeff Willoh currently in second with 794 points. At Oakland, Pedro Gonzales, on the St. LouiS Powersports Kawasaki, was the big winner. Gonzales topped both 250cc mains and moved closer to Wilioh in the series points standings. The other winner at Oakland was Suzuki-mounted Nick Metcalf who won Friday night's 125cc main. With two rounds left in Albuquerque, New M.exico, and Tacoma, Washington, Antunez leads the series with 991 points, followed by Willoh with 794 and GOIlUIIes with 743. Despite the complete format of the Grands Prix being changed to one that it was hoped to better suit television coverage, it now appears that the EuroSport company (which covers the World Championship CycleTrader.com is working with Freddie Spencer to enroll one winner in
