SFX Motor Sports Arenacross Series Round 13: Portland Memorial Coliseum ( )0. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT PORTlAND, OR, MAR. 2-3 awasaki-mounted Brian Stone's 22nd birthday party went off with a bang at round 13 of the 15-round SFX Motor Sports Arenacross Series, as the rider from Kansas City, Missouri, notched a pair of Professionalclass wins inside the Memorial Coliseum in Portland. More importantly, Stone inched closer to what he hopes will be the series title with his Friday night 125cc win and a 250cc win on Saturday. Stone came into the round with a 17 -point lead, and he was joined by Texan Nick Metcalf in the winner's circle; Metcalf snared a 250cc win on Friday night and Saturday's 125cc victory. Metcalf darted ahead of the field at the unleashing of the 16-rider final, but his lead came and went just as quickly, as Huffman, the fastest rider through the whoop section, took control. However, Huffman didn't maintain that position long, as the former factory rider, hammered by severe arm pump, began to fade. Metcalf re-inherited the lead, though Hagseth was close behind. A large pack of riders - Californian Billy Jurevich, Stone, Chester and Washington's Jay Whipple - battled for third until Stone settled into the position for several laps, followed by Chester. Up front, Hagseth stayed within contention, but in the later stages Metcalf turned up the wick and left Hagseth to hold off Stone and Chester, whose battle went Chester's way at the finish. However, Chester suffered a horrific crash at the completion, as the top two riders had stopped to trade compliments, and Chester, still on the gas to keep Stone at bay, slammed into the duo and was badly shaken. Jurevich, Whipple, Nevada's Brian Foster, Californian Jeremy Santoro, Mike Storm and Tracy Johnson filled out the top 10. Metcalf ran out front in the 250cc final and held the point position for many laps, although the Texan's chances of a Saturday night sweep came to an abrupt end when he got cross-rutted and pitched over the bars. Stone was right there to snatch the lead after forging through the field. Chester followed Stone's drive through traffic and made a challenge for the lead on several occasions, but K 74 MARCH 21, 2001 • cue I (Above) Brian Stone was a two-elass winner at the Portland, Oregon, round of the SF)( Motor Sports Arenacross Series, winning the 25Oc:c final on Friday and the 125c:c main on Saturday. (RIght) Oregon's Ryan Huffman won the crowd-funded Dash For Cash on both nights, pocketing nearty $2000 for his efforts. search of what he hoped would be win number two. Metcalf built up a large lead in the process, while Hagseth and Foster battled ahead of a Stone/Chester swapfest. Foster's fine ride ended after he tangled with a lapped rider, moving both Stone and Chester up a position, and also leaving Hagseth with a clear-cut secondplace finish to Metcalf. Stone slammed the door on Chester to narrowly net third. Foster remounted quickly to salvage fifth, followed by local rider Storm, Oregonian Keith Kadell, Washington's Nick Hansen, Whipple and Johnson. The final main event of the weekend came down to a race within a race, as Chester badly needed to beat Stone to keep his title chances alive. Huffman brought the crowd to life by snatching the holeshot in the 250cc final. The Yamaha-mounted Huffman enjoyed a huge lead early on, but he again faded due to arm pump. Stone, Chester, Metcalf, Hagseth and Whipple were closely bunched in a scramble for positions, but Stone rode with pure determination and did just what he had to do to build his point lead get out front and remain there - to snare the win. Chester again rode in Stone's shadow, but the rider from Lenior, North Carolina, was agajn doomed to the second-place laurels, ahead of Metcalf and then Huffman, who posted his best performance of the weekend with a fourth-place finish after also capturing Saturday's Dash For Cash. Hagseth finished fifth· his only non-podium finish of the weekend· followed by Whipple, Foster, Greg Crater, J.R. Storm, Santoro, and Terry Hamness filled out the top 10. Hagseth - who, like Metcalf, was taking a break from the SFX National Series - drilled the holeshot in Saturday's 125cc final, with Metcalf and Foster in close quarters. Metcalf made a slick move to relegate Hagseth to second, while Chester was mired midpack and had a long way to go before he could catch the lead trio.
