Willow Springs MotlIrcycle Club Round Z: Willow Springs International Raceway Haskovec Wrecks'em Again BY ERIC VINCENT ROSAMOND, CA, FEB, 17-18 incent Haskovec won his second straight Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One Grand Prix race at round two of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club action at Willow Springs International Raceway, AMA Superbike Series racers Anthony Gobert and his brother Aaron were also on hand and competing at this round of WSMC activities. Haskovec took the lead off the line on his Team Hyper Cycle-sponsored Suzuki GSX·RI100, followed by Chuck Graves in second and Richard Alexander in third. Midway through lap two, Alexander found himself drafted and passed by a charging Jason Pridmore. For the next several laps, Graves was stuck to Haskovec's rear tire and appeared ready to attempt a pass. However, the race was stopped midway through lap four after a racer crashed and his motorcycle was left on the track. In the eight-lap restart, Graves rocketed into the lead coming out of turn one, with Haskovec moving into second and Pridmore emerging in third. For the next five laps, Haskovec continued to close the gap on Graves until they were only separated by one second. However, on lap seven, Graves rode wide through turn one, running into the dirt but keeping the motorcycle upright. Graves reentered the race but fpund himself in third place. Haskovec crossed the line with the win, followed by Pridmore in second and Graves finishing third. "I missed a shift going into turn one and it took a moment for me to recover," said Graves after the race. Haskovec said he experienced some frightening moments during the race as well. "My rear tire was sliding all the way through turn eight," he said. "Then I saw Chuck nearly lose it in turn one, but I saw that he saved it." Haskovec was the fastest racer off the line in the Hyperclub Formula Two Grand Prix race, with Matt Wait emerging in second and Jacob West in third. At the end of the first of 10 V 58 MARCH 14, 2001 • c u e I _ laps, Wait and West were side by side, but Wait held his challenger off and held on to second going into turn two. The battle for second heated up at the end of lap two, when Wait and West were joined by Pridmore and Aaron Gobert. Those four riders were packed together down the front straight while Haskovec managed to open a gap on his pursuers. At the halfway point, Anthony Gobert drafted and passed his brother Aaron on the front straight. At the same time, Haskovec's gap began to shrink. At this point, the two Goberts were swapping second place as they continued to reel in Haskovec. Anthony Gobert powered his way around Haskovec between turns two and three as lap seven got under way. A few turns later, Aaron Gobert drafted Haskovec down the back straight and then powered past him to take over second. Aaron was on a roll; he caught his brother on the front straight to start lap nine and moved into the lead. On the white-flag lap, Pridmore drafted and passed Haskovec on the back straight to move into third. Coming out of turn nine and headed for the checkered flag, the Gobert brothers were side by side. At the line, Aaron just edged out Anthony for the race win, and Pridmore crossed the line in third. The Gobert brothers dominated the Graves Motorsports 650cc Superbike race as well, with Anthony emerging with the lead after passing Graves, and Kenny Kopecky holding down an early third. Mark Palazzo drafted and passed Kopecky on the back straight on the first lap and then proceeded to power past Graves in the fast turneight sweeper. On the following lap, Aaron Gobert powered his way up into second. Completing lap five of the six-lap race, Haskovec drafted and passed Palazzo on the front straight to move into third. However, Palazzo was undeterred and, rounding the fast turn-eight sweeper, he moved around the outside of Haskovec to move back into third. Despite a final challenge by Haskovec, Palazzo held on to finish third, with Anthony Gobert taking the race win and his brother Aaron finishing second. l:1li n __ s Willow Spriags Intemlltional Raceway Rosamand, Califllmia Results: FeIInwy 17-18, ZOOl Ulaund 2l F-l: I. Los Angeles County Raceway Mountain Tops LACR Motocross By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,FEB.18 California Racing Club's 125cc Beginner class fell victim to a hard·charging Brett Mountain as he swept both motos during Sunday motocross action at Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale. In the first round of racing, Honda-mounted Chris Brownell absconded with the holeshot, over Mountain, Alex Arreguin and the rest of the field. Mountain stayed glued to Brownell and was handed the lead when Brownell went down on lap two. With a clear track ahead of him, Mountain pulled away from Arreguin at the rate of a couple of seconds per lap for a seemingly easy win. Third went 10 Casey White after a rnidpack start, followed by Brownell and Jimmy Patrick. Brownell proved his first-moto holeshot was no fluke, as he did it again in mota two, ahead of Mountain and White. Brownell's lead lasted a lap before he got sideways going up the over-and·under bridge and Mountain shot past. Mountain put his N-Style/Renthal/ Fox/Maxima/Mechanics Wear-backed YZ125 into overdrive and ran away from the pack for a most convincing win. Arreguin and Brownell argued over second place for much of the molo, with Arreguin prevailing 10 earn the second-place trophy. White went 3-5 for fourth, followed by the 5-4 score of Patrick. Robbie Dunham led the first Vet Pro mote up until the final lap, when a bobble- in a tum allowed Jimmy Roberts to slip past and continue on for the win. Troy Welty, who was also in the hunt until running into the back of Dunham in a tum, finished third, over Eric Loney and Ed Tripp. Welty returned with a vengeance to smoke everyone in the second moto on his G-Sport/SVC-backed RM125 to take home the first-place money. Dunham went 2-2 for runner-up payback. Roberts suffered a bad start and a couple of bobbles along the way to go 1-4 for third, over the 4-3 score of Loney. William Welchhance went four for four to post wins in both the Junior Vet Novice and Vet Novice classes. James Hutchinson and Dal Trubey traded runner-up finishes in the Junior Vet class, with Hutchinson coming out on top in round two. Trubey retumed to go 2-3 to top the 5-2 tally of Greg Tumer for second overall in the Vet class. R.sults S/PfW (4-6): J. Nicholas Franco (Pol); 2. Jake O'DonneII (KTM). 60 BEQ: 1.
