Northwest Arenacross Nationals Round 7: Forster Livestock Pavilion STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM,OR,FEB. 16, 18 W amaha-mounted Tony Graves I continued his current steamroUing of the Northwest with a two-class decimation of the 125 and 250cc Pro classes at round seven of the CMCsanctioned Northwest Arenacross Nationals, held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Besides Graves, there were many other impressive double-class winners, including Cobra-mounted Trent Jones, winner of the Pee Wee (7-8) and 50cc Open classes; Supermini and 80cc (14-16) winner Drew Davis; Ryan Huege, the 125cc Junior and Schoolboy victor; and Tyler Fick, who topped the 125cc and Before The Hill Intermediate classes inside the Forster Uvestock Pavil ion. Perhaps the most impressive of the weekend's top performers was Idaho's Matt Deatley. The Suzukiand Kawasaki-mounted Deatley was a four-class contestant on the weekend. Deatley topped the 60cc Open, 80cc (9-11), and 60cc Senior classes. His only loss came in the Supermini class, in which he finished fifth in the 16-rider field. The two-event weekend started off with a regular season CMC arenacross on Friday night. Graves also carded wins in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes, although in the 250cc Pro class, Graves had brutally tough hand to pressure the veteran, but both riders had traveled all night after an arena cross in eastem Oregon and weren't as razor-sharp as they normallyare. While Graves did top both 125cc Pro-class motos to earn the top payoff, both Storm and Corder had their chances at victory, but it was the Eugene-area rider's day: He led Team Green's Corder (2-2) and Team SMP's Storm (3-3) onto the podium. Rounding out the top five overall were Washingtonians Garhett Carter (5-4) and Shawn Bushnell (4-8). (Le'" Washington'. Tony BoUlllhtDn won the second Supermini moto, but Drew Davi. _n the ove...ll. While Leach won the opening moto, Graves came back with a vengeance to win moto two, which earned the Herb's Cycle Town/Sinisalo/LRD-backed Graves his second of two overall Pro-class wins. Leach (12) and Suzuki rider J.R. Vielle (3-3) filled out the top three overall. On Sunday, at the Lee Collins/Bob Leach-promoted CMC Northwest Arenacross National, Graves also faced stiff competition, as 125cc specialists Mike Storm and Mike Corder were on 52 MARCH 14. 2001 • c u e I _ n __ s (RIghtl Tony Graves _ . the dominant Pro rider .t round - . In the combined 125cc Intermediate class, the aforementioned Fick flew to superb 1-1 wins after finally overcoming his string of crash- induced inconsistent finishes. Fick finished ahead of Zach Woodward and Joey Mancuso in both motos, with Woodward (2-3) netting second overall, ahead of Mancuso (5-2), the third-place overall finisher. Fick and Vielle were the dominant riders in the Before The Hill Intermediate class, with Vielle, the lone Professional rider in the field, using his Suzuki 250 to top moto one, followed by Fick and Washington's Keith Ford. Fick fended off Vielle to snare a mototwo victory to earn the 16-yearold Oregonian his second of two impressive overall victories. VieUe (1-2), Ford (3-3), Mancuso (4-4) and Woodward (5-5) filled out the top five in the 16-rider fieJc:L Davis, who had earlier topped the 80cc (14-16) class, came back to convincingly win the ultracompetitive Supermini-class overall, although Davis could only connect on a victory in one of the two motos. Davis demolished the competition in moto one, but moto two was a different story. Fellow CR pilot Tony Boughten got out of the chute fastest to overcome Davis, but, due to a first-moto fifthplace fmish, Boughten saw the overall slip from his grasp and go to Davis (1-2). Yamaha rider Duane Lanphere (23), Boughten (5-1), Brock Chappelle (3-4) and Deatley (6-5) filled out the top five, ahead of the top local rider, Nick Randklev (4-8). Graves and Leach split wins in the 250cc Pro class, but it was Graves who garnered the overall win - much as he has all season - with his valiant moto-two performances. Leach netted the second-place money, ahead of Carter (4-3) and Vielle (3-4). Jon Kauffman swept both combined 250cc Intermediate-class motos to lead the Kawasaki-mounted Ford (2-2) and Shon Series (3-3) into the top three overall. Trent Jones, one of the day's "Super Six" winners of two classes (or more), won the 50cc Open and Pee Wee (7 -8) classes, although Polini rider Eli Jonason made things tough for the Cobra-mounted Jones in his two wins. In the Pee Wee (7-8) class, Husky rider David Paschke finished third to Jones and Jonason. Honda-mounted Jason Franz has been close to victory on several occasions in the 250cc Junior class, but today the 26-year-old DTR/Salem Honda-backed rider finally had things going his way for an overall win. While Franz logged a moto-one victory, he narrowly averted disaster in moto two; Franz was in the middle of a moto-two pileup but recovered to finish third at moto's end, which was good for the overall victory, ahead of Joe Martin, Mike Cosgrove, Mike Clayton and Shawn Huege.
