He also took the overall for the serles In the 125cc Open and 125cc Intermediate divisions. (Below) In Fort Worth, Texas, Kyle Swanson (313) got the 50cc Open holeshot, with David Bryant Jr. (22), Caleb Dowell (155), Ruben Salazar (23), Austin Cox (19) and Tyler Haemsbergen (22, far right) In tow. Swanson took the win for the day with a 2-1 punch; Bryant took second with a 1-2 tally. By KAT SPANN AND THE BECKSTER PHOTOS BY KAT SPANN FORT WORTH, IX, FEB. 18 onda of Houston's J.J. Pecsok rallied his way to three overall wins in the 125cc Intermediate, 125cc Open and 250cc Intermediate categories over the four-round inaugural Honda of Houston/FMF Winter Racing Series. Pecsok used consistency in the 125cc categories to beat out his heaviest competition, Ty Conner. Peesok won two of the four rounds in each of the 125cc events but used perfection in the 250cc Intermediate contest to win on his own merit at every stop along the way. Though 50cc racer David Bryant Jr., 60cc pilot Blake Wharton and 80cc-mounted Bryan Zachary each took double class wins in the series, only two riders aside from Pecsok attained a perfect win score. Mike Shelman won every race in the 250cc Beginner division, while James Willingham aced the 250cc Novice class. The fina I round at Village Creek Motocross Park almost didn't happen, considering that six inches of rain fell on the park in a two-day period three days prior to the event. Promoter Terry Cordray used every trick in the book to preserve the track, opening the gates to greet almost 400 entered racers for the final round. The best race of the final round was in the 80cc Open category, which had Team Green teammates Jonathan Kerr of Texas and Dennis Jonon of Kansas pitted against one another. Jonon appeared to be in the holeshot position until the exit from the sweeping first turn, when Kerr took the nod and the 35-rider gate headed up the first hill. The first lap was intense; Jonon stayed at Kerr's rear wheel through the entire course. At the top of lap two, Jonon slipped 50 MARCH 14.2001 • c u e I • (Right! Blake Wharton won the 80cc (7-9) and 80cc Open classes and finished third In the 80cc (7-11) class. (8el_ rlght) The Winter Racing Serfes had a different 125cc Novice winner at each of the four rounds. David Bryant (121) won the final round at Village Creek MX Part<; Jeffrey Antwine (4) won round three. past Kerr in the turn out of the whoops as they headed up the hill again. Both front-runners set a blistering pace that left the rest of the class behind. Points leader Bryan Zachary suffered a less-than-stellar start and then even more bad luck when he slid out on the way down the hill and blew a head gasket. Kerr kept pace with Jonon through the second lap and got a shot at Jonon on top of the hill, emerging the leader, but Jonon took back the lead shortly after. Zachary hobbled his way around the track to finish near the back of the pack. Texan Austin Miller finished third, behind Jonon and Kerr and followed by Colorado's Ike Jost and Marshall Smith of Texas. The second moto saw Kerr take the lead off of the gate. Jonon stayed close to Kerr, with Vince Monteleone in third and Zachary in fourth. At the start of lap two, Kerr crossed in front of Jonon going up the hill over a jump, forcing Jonon to go left to n __ s • IFI avoid a collision. Meanwhile, Zachary got around Monteleone for third. For the remainder, Jonon never let Kerr loose as they both continued to charge the turns and cannon off the jumps side by side. Kerr took the win, and each gave the other a thumbs-up afterward. Zachary finished third, but his first-moto finish kept him out of trophy contention, though he was still awarded the series overall. Caleb Dowell returned from the injured reserve list at the halfway point of the series and did his best to upset the points race in the 50cc (4-6) class. Series points leader (and winner of rounds one and two) Tanner Neujahr got the first-moto holeshot and led the first lap before Dowell took charge, passing Neujahr and holding the lead to the checkered flag. Dowell got the holeshot the second time out and went wire to wire for the win and the overall, but Neujahr's 1-1-2-2 score in the series awarded him the series overall plaque and contingencies for first place. David Bryant Jr. used ~ 2-1-52 tally to take the series win in the 50cc Open class with 96 points. Bryant returned in the 50cc (7-8) class to finish with another second place, but once again he used a 1-1-11-2 to snake the overall series top awards. Blake Wharton came close to a sweep in all four rounds of 60cc (7-9) competition for his overall win, but a fourth place in round two dashed a perfect score claim. Wharton used 89 points to win the 60cc Open to Zeb Smith's 78 points for second. Kerr came in at the midway point of the series to rain on Zachary's parade, but Zachary collected enough points in the first two rounds to solidify both the 80cc (14-15) and 80cc Open-class overall series wins. Shelman led all four laps in both 250cc Beginner motos for another win, ending the series with a perfect 120 points. Shelman finished a healthy 20 seconds in front of Brandon Battson in second in the first moto and the same distance in front of Ronny Gibson in the second moto. eN ViI"ge Creek MX Pan Fort WortII, Teus Results: febnwy II, 2001 lReun_ 41 50 (4·6): I.
