Stratton was talking some trash after holding off Cox, who later promised that they would meet again during the next race and that the outcome would be different. Stratton later had his hands full in the Supertwins race trying to hold off Ducati 748 rider Wyeth Jackson. After Tom Hull ran off and hid from the field, spectators turned their attention to the tight battle for second between Stratton and Jackson. Jackson nearly beat Stratton at the line. eN Firebinl Raceway Chandler, Arizona Resubs: February 10-11, ZOOl (Round 11 Rreblrd Raceway: Current number-on&-plate holder Eric Anderson "only" entered eight races at round one of the CCS Southwest Regional Sprint Series in Chandler, Arizona. He won the Lightweight Superbike race. CCS Southwest Regional Sprint Series Round 1: firebird Raceway BecklDan Best Man at Firebird Opener By MICHAEL Ross CHANDLER, AZ, FEB. 10·11 enny Beckman of Phoenix, Arizona, used his A.J. Ammanntuned Yamaha YZFl OOOR 1 to claim the Unlimited GP race and turn the fastest laps of the weekend during the opening round of the SFX/CCS Southwest Sprint Series at Firebird Raceway. Beckman pulled off a thrilling win in front of a packed crowd at Firebird East, over GSXR750 pilot Rory Palmer and ZX9R-mounted Larry Locklear after a pitched battle that went down to the wire. "This is my first win [in this class] in 1 1/2 years, and it feels great," beamed Beckman. "I passed Rory in turn four when he made a mistake and then just concentrated on keeping this thing from throwing me off. I owe much of my success to A.J., who prepped the bike for me." "I made some mistakes, but I'm learning how to ride Michelins," reported runner-up Palmer, who rode on Dunlops for years. "You can't just yank it around; you have to be smooth." Third place went to hard-riding Larry Locklear. "We all had a lot of fun and got out unscathed, so I am happy with the finish," said the Texan. "Getting out unscathed" seemed to be the phrase of the weekend. CCS has only raced once before at Firebird East, and the course took its toll on many riders. Many problems were blamed on cold tires. The morning hours were in the high 30s, and many L riders simply went out too fast on a cold track. There were at least 11 crashes over the weekend. Firebird East is located inside the expansive Firebird International Raceway and borders the main track on the east side. It runs clockwise and features 10 turns. This track is used frequently by Indy car teams to test during the winter months and features pit-side spectating only. The current number-one-plate holder, Eric Anderson, joked while standing in the registration line that he was "only" going to enter eight races. This season, Anderson traded in his Honda CBR600F4 and bought a Suzuki GSX-R750 but kept his SV650. In all, he placed 10th in Unlimited GP, eighth in Heavyweight Superbike, seventh in Heavyweight Supersport, fourth in GTO and Supertwins, second in Lightweight GP and GT Lights, and first in Lightweight Superbike. Several other racers turned in standout performances. Ty Piz was tuning up for a season of AMA Formula Two racing and scored wins in Middleweight GP after an exciting dice with Chad Rolland and Eric Hancock. Piz later scored a big win in the 30-minute GTU race by outbraking Larry Locklear in turn 10 with five laps to go. He then went on to win the Lightweight GP class wire to wire. During his first weekend as an Expert, Josh Sortor captured the Middleweight Sportsman win and won the Lightweight Supersport race on his Aprilia 250. U/L S/SPT AM: 1. Erik Freitog (Hon): 2. On the fourth lap, he took the second-place position in the whoops, dropping Bennick to third. Stiles then set out after Monk, who still had a little breathing room. Once the Alabama Gang started getting into lapped traffic, the race got much tighter. After a couple of laps of bar-banging and brake-checking, Stiles used the long whoop section again to pass Monk and all the lappers. That put Stiles in front for good, ahead of Monk and Bennick. Bennick got the holeshot in the 250cc A main event, followed by Aaron Stancil, Monk and Stiles. By the second lap, Stiles was up to second F'" ~e and charging. On the fourth lap, ht. ~~mmed through the whoops to take the lead. For the rest of the 14-lap race, Stiles was on cruise control en route to the win. In the meantime, Monk had gotten past Stancil and was working on Bennick, but without success. Bennick maintained runner-up, keeping Monk at bay; Monk took the final podium By BARBARA WILLIAMS SHELBYVILLE, TN, JAN. 26-27 TM-mounted Clark Stiles of Athens, Alabama, made his mark at rounds seven and eight of the AMA Victory Sports Indoor Motocross Winter Series by notching three out of four wins in the 125cc A and 250cc A divisions on the weekend. Stiles also managed a great comeback in Saturday's 125cc A main event to finish third. That made Clark the big-money winner, pocketing over $2000 of the Victory Sports Pro purse. Just over 900 riders turned out for a big weekend of hot racing in the Calsonic Arena. Sloan's Cycles sponsored the event, which was presented by the Volunteer Fire Services. On Friday night, the 125cc A class left the gate with Alabama's Jon Boy Monk, Todd Bennick of Nebo, North Carolina, and Matt Macan of Amherst, Ohio, leading the way.
