CMC Golden State Nationals, Pacific Northwest Region Round 2: Forster Livestock Pavilion D Dave Fox (3-3). Yamaha rider Ken Romero wasn't far off the Pros' pace, nabbing the overall in the Intermediate portion with a 1-1 sweep, ahead of former Pro Rodney Keller (2-2) and Greg Hannon (3-3). Graves jumped out in front of the first 125cc Pro-class moto, with round-one winner Keith Kadell, Mike Storm, Ryan Metzler and J.R. Meusling in tow. While Graves' lead increased with each circuit, a threeway battle for second raged between Storm, Metzler and Kadell, although Kadell slid out and spent the rest of the moto working through the field before eventually finishing third at moto's end, behind Graves and Storm. Graves and Storm's battle resumed in moto two, but this time the SMP/Hillsboro MotorcyclesSTORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, FEB. 12 fD)ound two of the Pacific Northwest WRegion CMC Golden State National Series, held at Forster Livestock Pavilion, saw the re-emergence of Oregon's Ryan Leach into the winner's circle with a two-class decimation. The Yamaha rider overcame poor starts in the first sets of 250cc and Open Pro classes to score a good-sized chunk of cash and contingencies. For much of the season, Leach has taken a back seat to Tony Graves in the 250cc and Open Pro classes, but on this particular day, Leach had "things going his way. Leach and Graves went head to head in the flfSt Vet/Open Pro moto, but Graves edged out Leach at the finish. Both riders, though, were campaigning separate classes; Graves' win came in the Vet class, and Leach won the Open Pro. Moto two was much the same, although Leach trailed Graves for the entire moto until making a last-lap pass on Graves to net the class win, ahead of Keith Kadell (2-2) and J.R. Meusling (3-3). Graves' Vet Over 25 win came ahead of Jason Matthews. Graves, who had been battling the flu all week and decided only that morning to make the trek north, topped the first Over 30 Pro moto with relative ease, but in moto two, AMA National veteran Don Bisceglia put the pressure on Graves from the 44 FEBRUARY 28, 2001 • DUD I (Above) Avan Leach topped the 250cc and Open Pro classe. at the second and final round of the CMC Golden State NatIonal. Storm held off Graves to score the moto win and, more importantly, the overall. Graves (1-2) netted second overall. Kadel! (3-3), Meusling (5-4) and Metzler ( 4-5) filled out the top five overall. Graves came back strong in the first 250cc Pro moto, holding a large advantage in the early stages, with Storm, Matthews and Bisceglia behind him. Leach got a poor start, but by the fifth lap he had clawed his way into contention after getting around the second-placed rider, Bisceglia. Leach then closed the gap on Graves at an alarming rate. Late in the moto, Graves took a nasty spill, and Leach inherited the lead and held it to the finish. Graves remounted quickly enough to garner second, (Above) Wa.h ngton'. Leach again had to mount a comefrom-behind charge in moto two. Bisceglia posted his best performance of the day, holding the point position for much of the race. Leach made a nifty block-pass to get around Graves and then set his sight on Bisceglia. The Herb's Cycle Town/Axo-supported rider then made a similar pass on Bisceglia to nab the lead and then held on to earn the overall win via 1-1 placings. Graves got around Bisceglia to finish second again, ahead of Bisceglia (4-3), Storm (3-4) and Matthews (5-5). Washington's Ryan Villopoto was among the select few two-class overall winners, posting the overall Supermini and eocc Junior (12-13) wins with 1-1 performances in each, leaving the competition far behind in both classes. Honda-mounted Drew Davis was Villopoto's closest competitor in the Supermini class, finishing second overall with a consistent 2-2 tally. Nick Randklev (5-3), Kenneth Hammontree (3-5) and Ricky Yorks (7-4) rounded out the top five. Villopoto netted a win in the eocc (12-13) class, ahead of Hammontree and Brock Chappelle. Randklev topped the eocc (7 -11) portion, ahead of Kyle Thompson and Jacob Kannada, while Jerry Braswell netted an eocc (14-16) class win ahead of Davis.
