A seasoned veteran of the AMA Grand National and SFX dirt-track series, Stanley demonstrated a mastery for finding traction in slick conditions around a course incorporating both dirt and concrete surfaces. Kurt Edwards put his DTX Yamaha YZ426F out front in the first heat, ahead of the Supermotard bikes of Bob Torset, on a YZ426F, and Canet, aboard a Husqvarna SM610R. Midway through the race, an injured rider lay sprawled across the racing line, bringing out a red flag. The restart saw 10 riders packed elbow to elbow on the front row, providing good action for the fans, but the order shuffled as the pack funneled into the first tum. Edwards fell on the opening lap and wound up finishing a lap down, while the Torset/Canet duel resumed mired in midpack. A pair of SuperTT newcomers, .Trevor Harrison and Lance Hallworth (both running 21inch front wheels and dual-sport tires), capitalized on good starts and 55,000 inside BC Place, a domed football stadium located in the heart of scenic Vancouver, British Columbia. "It would be nice to say the show sold out on our behalf," said STTARS organizer Don Canet, "but the vast majority came to see Monster Trucks. It offers great exposure for SuperTT, just the same." As with last month's SFX Monster Jam at Washington's Tacoma Dome, SuperTT motorcycles ran several times throughout the evening's program. A 24-rider field consisting of a mix of Supermotard, DTX, dirt-track and dual-sport machines were divided into two qualifying heats run early in the show. The top eight finishers from each heat transferred directly to the main, while the remaining riders were 52 FEBRUARY 28. 200 1 • cue • • n _ .. 51 held the top two spots in the abbreviated four-lap heat as Canet and Torset closed in on the final lap. Heat B provided 10 laps of unadulterated action, with YZ400F rider Jeff Annen snatching the early lead, ahead of a pair of Kawasaki KX250s ridden by Stanley and Jeff Hiatt. Yamaha WR400 pilot Tyler Sandell hung on in fourth, making it a quartet of DTX·style bikes at the front, all wearing dirt-track tires mounted on 19-inch wheels. Annen maintained his narrow margin to stay clear of a seesaw battle over the next four spots, as motocrosser Bobby Frankhouser (on a YZ400F) and Glenn Nixon (on a WR400) joined the fight. Stanley slipped past Annen on lap five and held the lead by the narrowest of margins for the remaining laps, with Frankhouser rounding out the top three.
